Whatever was said to Zidane he should have known not to react the way he did. For people saying it was racist we will not know unless Zidane comes out and says what he reacted to.
Like a lot of previous World Cups bit of a tactical and dull game at times but Italy did what was needed and scored all their penalties.

Italy always have a way of weaseling their way to a victory.Quoted from

Yeah that why they have gone out of the last 3 WCs on penalties & lost Euro200 to France with the last kick of the 90 mins

Rooney was frustrated at being the lone man up front, the French team was built around Zidane, how the hell can you compare the two?

Zidane, irrespective of this unusual indiscretion will be remembered as a true footballing legend and rightly so; Who was dismissed not by the match officials own judgments but the persuasive convictions of conmen
The 2006 world cup winning team however will just be remembered as a fortuitously negative “ghost” team that capitalized on a tournament that went invisible from the knock out stages onwards.

Both teams deserved to win, but in the end there could only be one. Well done Italy, you defended and kept your chin up to the end. A terrible shame that Zidane had to end his career on such a low note, there can be no excuses for such behaviour at this level on a world stage. Viva Italia, and thanks to both teams for providing such a rollercoaster final!

A great final with Italy coming out as deserved winners. In 2000 when they lost the Euro 2000 final I was in Italy and thought the people would be fighting and being violent like happens in the UK, but NO, they were on the streets talking, mixing with the French fans and having a beer and talking about the game. How I would have loved to have been in that little town last night Truly deserving winners, the players and the country. As for Zidane, yes he made a big mistake, but lets not remember him for that, he is one of the greatest players of a generation, and we should always remember him for that

IT'S OBVIOUS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO DO IN ANY COMPETION.....TO WIN. ITALY PLAYED BETTER, CLEANER AND MORE DIRECTED TO THE RESULT THAN EVERY OTHER TEAM: THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE. DESPITE RACISM ITALY HAS WON, DESPITE THE WORDS ON THE GERMAN PRESS, AND DESPITE THE SKANDAL THE NATIONAL TEAM DEMONSTRATED TO DESERVE THE CUP. ENGLAND WON...ONLY IN '66 WITH VIOLENCE AND MORE....

I have read that the defender in question might have called him a terrorist. I have to say however that I think a player has experienced as Zidane should understand that HE CANNOT DO WHAT HE DID and get away with it. There is no excuse for that kind of behaviour. Its quite sad to see his career end this way. One can only wonder what he was THINKING.....

1934 1938 1982 2006 winners Losers in final 1970 losers in final on penalties 1994 countless semi final appearances Yeah right they were lucky in all? Get over it you bigot. What more does any team have to do? Just remember and think before you speak or write that to play below par in a world cup final you have to get there first!!!!!!!!!!! In this world cup without doubt and as agreed by nearly all the pundits Italy have been the most consistent team throughout and the best, without doubt. They were magnificent against Germany in the semi. Just get over it will you and stop making stupid crass remarks that clearly have not been fully thought out. You dont get a record like Italys by being lucky. Historty will show Italy as world cup winners 2006 it wont say world cup winners 2006 Italy but France played better 2nd half with Italy on top 1st half and should have been at least 2 goals up. Similarly history wont say England world cup winners 1966 but they won it by at best a debatable goal at worst a goal that never was. I fully understand and empathise with you and the other head in bucket brigade though cause jealousy and envy can be all consuming for the human mind and body. FORZA ITALIA

I AGREE 'dogy21'...
There are alot of sore losers on these boards I have found that out before.
The only teams that ever looked like they were going to battle it out for the "Rank 1" was Italy, Germany, Brazil and France. But as you said they were ALWAYS second best. I loved watching Italy play this tournament much more then since 1990 when they hosted a beautiful World Cup of their own and were unlucky not to WIN it that year.
I'm so so so happy for them and Cannovaro..WHAT A PLAYER!..He has Proved he is the best in the business..
As for Zidane, what a prat, he has proved as much as he has that inner Talent he is still far from the finished article. Unlucky for him to Bow out like that, but he ONLY has himself to Blame.
Forza Azzurri!!!!!!!...RANK NUMBER 1 IN THE WORLD!!!
ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!! ITALIA!!

You see folks? This is the type of message that comes from persons like him and Materazzi...Typical. Unfortunately Zidane let himself be brought down to Materazzis level. He (Materazzi) has a reputation in international football for being a buffon. You only need to see his poor looking tattoos to know what kind of player and person he is...

This was supposed to be the "beautiful game" instead we get bad refs, poor sportsmanship, diving, players trying to get other players sent off. Yes there were many memorable highlights however, the moments of sheer madness will weigh cloud this world cup. Germany as host were fantastic. The best WC since, dare I say it, USA 94.
