So, England start their World Cup with a win, but how do you assess Sven's tactics and the players' performance? And rate the players here: news.bbc.co.uk/sport...

All I'll say is if England played like they did in the second half agaisnt a better oppisiton then they most likely would have drew or lost.
Tactics were dreadful and some fo the players made some tacky mistakes.

Ordinary in the first half, dreadful in the second. It's 2002 all over again. Idiotic substitutions as well.

Crouch can't play up front on his own.
If Owen came off it had to be Walcott to take his place.

Great result and some food for thought. Came through a tough, physical battle with a very unhelpful ref, and picked up a rare first match win for England. We should be aiming to start out slow and build to peak at the final, so this is exactly the kind of result we want.
IMO we looked much better once Owen went off. Joe Cole should have been tried as a support striker earlier - he's much better with his back to goal than Gerrard, who had a great game in holding midfield. Downing had a nifty cameo on the left, Rio looked solid, Frank was only kept out by some great keeping, and Robinson kept a good clean sheet.
Thoughts for the next game: should Owen start, or are we better off committing to the 4-5-1 and trying to bed Joe Cole into the support role?

Downing and Hargreaves aren't going to be England's saviours at this cup. Downing did his job well but it wasn't what England needed at the time. Hargreaves isn't even the best player is his position, Carrick is the man for the holding midfield role.
Still 3 points so i shan't complain

WHY PUT HARGREAVES ON! England needed someeone near Crouch so he puts on Hargreaves! it's rediculous, if Walcott's not got the confidence of Sven he should have sent him home and kept Defoe. SVEN IS TACTICALLY INEPT!

what have we learnt from previous competitions? nothing!
yet again we allow the opposition to dominate possession and he takes off Owen and leaves Crouch with no one to play off
not impressive at all

Same Old Sven England. 45 minutes of huff and puff premiership football. Whatever we score in first half, thats the last goal. 2nd half, play sitting ducks in our penatly area for 45 minutes.
Honestly, why????????????? WHY ??????????????????????????????????
Granted it was 30 degrees. But is this merely down to the temperature?? I dont think so.
Lets hope we can get out of the group. We got 3 points. Unless we start playing football in the 2nd half we will NOT go far.

Wow that really was a poor performance. Play like that against Sweden we will be in big trouble. Mind you Paraguay are not as bad as people make them out to be! 1/4 finals at best me thinks again!!

No creativity.
Long ball tactics? Why when you have Gerrard, Beckham, Joe Cole?
Owen is blasted with criticism every time but how the hec do you want to him to play well and score when you send him long balls?? Send him balls on the ground in the box and he will score, check out his club goals for proof.
Lampard offers nothing to the team.
Downing does not have international ability from what we have seen.
We defended a 1-0 lead again? Oh my god please tell me this isn't happening again...
I hope tactics are revised for the next match.

Awful. England clearly need Wayne Rooney. Sven being Sven will play Rooney against Trinidad and Tobago. Neville, Cole and Terry make far too many mistakes. England can win the world cup and although there was far too much fuss, I can see why there was so much made on Rooneys injury.

Cant judge robbo as he had nothing to do. I thought that rio had a good game even with my distaste for him.
Terry again showed he cant replicated any form for England, A Cole was decent, Neville gave the ball away too much.
Gerard was solid, lampard was pretty decent aswell. Beckham had an impressive first 30 mins but after that his game seemed to fall to pieces. J Cole was great, and Downing had an impact down the left.
Owen proved to us he isnt fully fit, but crouch had another great game, pity Sven screwed around with the tactics.
I think Sven will definately regret not taking Defoe or Bent

Japan 2002 all over again. Real contenders for the first half; dead on their feet for the second. Bizarre substitutions just gave away the momentum. Crouch on a yellow card, Owen still not apparently fit for 90mins, Rooney not fit full stop; could be Walcot on his own soon, except that he's only there for the ride. Thank goodness for Owen Hargreaves
