Platini - from Richard Woolley

Is Michel Platini the greatest midfielder of all time? His strike rate for a midfielder was phenomenal, more than a goal every two games for France! He ran almost every game for France, a great passer of the ball and great goal scorer, I loved the way he galvanised France in the 1984 Euro Championships when he scored 9 goals including a hat-trick against Yugoslavia and that famous late winner agai...[Read more]

John on Scotland

Can Scotland now humble France and Ukraine? There was once a time when no team in the world would want to play us. If you were in France jersey now, would you be able to say with 100% certainty that the game was a foregone conclusion? Forget 2nd - aim for 1st knowing the fans would be over the moon with 2nd. Brazil out in the second round?

The Brazilian coach has deliberately avoided any testing friendlies, claiming that he wants his team to 'peak at the right time'. This arrogance could see Brazil go out early on.If they start slowly and Croatia beat them in the first group match they'll almost certainly finish second in the group and go on to play either Italy or the Czech Republic in the second round. Either of these sides are we...[Read more]

Is Ronaldinho the best?

RedPMc asks:I don't think he is. He may be one of the most skillfull along with others like Ronaldo(MUTD SCUM) and Robinho but as far as being the best i think not. arkie asks: are these the "lost years?"

Could the Erikson era be the biggest waste of opportunity for England? In my opinion he has had fantastic talent to work with during his time as England manager. Yes he has managed qualification at every tournament. However, each tournament has seen a series of poor planning, bad team and squad selection and inept tactical ability. In addition the lack of passion is there for all to see.His reign h...[Read more]

BM: Why take 3 keepers?

Why take 3 keepers ?I think I am correct in saying the WC rules allow teams to call in an emergency keeper if needed, so I wonder why teams still insist on taking 3. Has there ever been a tournament when a team has had all 3 keepers injured? By taking just two keepers it would free up an extra place for an outfield player - in Englands case this could have been Defoe.BobMoore...[Read more]

The World Cup is getting better TV ratings than even the hockey and Basketball finals that are also taking place. In the streets you see many people wearing USMNT soccer shirts, people are kicking soccer ball around in the parks (even tho it is very hot). The team drew 1-1 with Italy, which is a great achievement.I think it would be wonderful if they beat Ghana and progressed to a second round meeti...[Read more]

We talk about countries footballing history and prowess in terms of the number of world cups they have won but this is very misleading in many cases because what have world cups won in the 1930's-1950's got to do with the modern game. This is particularly true in the case of a country like Italy.Three world cups but two of them in the 1930's - at least 20 years before most other countries had even...[Read more]

CTTM seeks ranking clarification

Does anybody know who would go through if England beat Sweden 1-0 and T&T beat Paraguay by 2-0. This would mean Sweden and T&T would have the same points and have drawn with each other.Does it then go to most goals scored (T&T) or least goals conceded (Sweden)?More confusing still, what if England win 2-0 and T&T 1-0. This leaves Sweden and T&T on the exact same points, goals scored, goals concede...[Read more]

Brazil 2-0 Australia - your reactions

Afternoon all,Well, the boys from Brazil look a little shaky again, but come through with the win - I suppose it could have been a more convincing scoreline had Kaka not hit the bar, but then Australia can take great heart from the game. The Socceroos certainly gave a good account of themselves and if Kewell or Viduka had converted their chances, it could have been another comeback like the Japan g...[Read more]
