Just wondering whether any of you hammers think that you have paid the right price for a man of just half a seasons Prem experience?

We were dead chuffed to sell Bent for the ridiculous figure of 2.5 Million last week to Charlton. I'm sure that cook girl (cant remember her name) is dead happy on her return on Dean.

He is a good forward, proven goalscorer, but IMO he is not justifiable as worth 7.5 milllion. I know some W Ham fans who share my thoughts... just wondered what the general sonsensus on this MB was!

we've payed for the potenial as well, both clubs hes been at have said hes the next shearer (as well as many managers), 7.25m is a huge price, especially for us, but at last we're signing potenially great players rather than selling them!

Norwich only made a 2.5m profit on a 22 year old future International, I'm sure they're delighted!

Defoe - 6m + Zamora = Crap deal.
Jenas - 7m = Crap deal.
Beattie - 7m = Crap deal.
Rebrov - 11m = Crap deal.
Postiga - 5.5m = Crap deal.
Baros - 5.5m = Crap deal.

We wouldn't be the first to make a bad striker signing, and we sure won't be the last.

But if Ashton scores goals for us, which he will do as we're THE most attack minded side in the division.

Then it's a good deal.

I think Defoe and Jenas were good signings, if you take the "potential factor" into account. Defoe could become a great England international in a couple of years as Owen ages. Jenas is also young, plays great football for the Spuds.

And Beattie was a bit over priced at 6 million (not 7) but is playing great this season, working blooody hard and proving he was worth it.

Postiga was the worst of those, to be sure.

But I dont think Ashton will ever become the next shearer - good finisher, but doesnt quite have the same vision. Plus he's not enough of a cheat to ever be in the same mould as the Elbow Man.

IMO 5 mill was just about right for ashton, not 7 and a bit.

Dean Ashton, has all ways been my first choice as to who we should buy but I certainly don't think he's worth 8m and reckon 5m max would have been a reasonable fee.But as I said in a thread yesterday if he turns out to be a 15 to 20 a goal season striker then it'll be money worth spent.

So basically you're a Spurs fan then, but support Everton too for a bit of glory?

Jenas = 7m? LOL nope.
Defoe = 6m + Zamora? LOL nope.

I'm still not too sure about Ashton, he didn't really set the Championship alight this season. I'm hoping he does well for you guys, but I wouldn't be that surprised if he struggled.

7m is a bit steep but it gets the ball rolling and other decent young players may be more willing to join us now. The snowball has started rolling again!

If he does struggle, we'll just sign Andy Johnson in a straight swap deal for Ashton.

I'm not a Spurs fan, I just like the way they play at the moment and support the fact that Jol Buys british, unlike that tossspot Wenger.

Just coz im a londoner doesnt mean i dont support everton. and what glory is there being an everton fan since the eighties? one FA cup win. I started this post to get some genuine opinions, not to read stupid comments. thanks to the other posters who can actually say sensible and interesting things.

I think most WH fans would agree 7.25 million is a lot, but as said above the lad has the potential to score 20 goals a season, and if he does that, the fee will be pennies. Plus as soon as he looks good Sh1tski will be in with a 15 million pound bid, and then a loan deal to Newcastle <laugh>

I think that's because he's been out with a few injuries..

It does sound like a lot of money, it's now up to Ashton to demonstrate that he is worth it. If his attitude is right he will do that.

Mr Pardew has a very good record for us in the transfer market, he has never spent this type of money before but if his judgement is only half as good as it has been on the others then it will be money well spent.

This always irks me a little lads. Of course Ashton isnt worth 7.5 million, Wright Philips sure as hell wasnt worth 20+ million but what a lot of people seem to forget is that clubs wont sell their best players unless they are offered a huge amount of money, way over what the player is actually worth.

Ashton, at his age and in the division he is in is probably worth 3 mil, tops. But Norwich arent going to sell a player for 3 mil when his replacement will cost that much.

But, for 7.5 mil then can buy a decent championship replacement for 2-4 mil and still make a profit, which will help to cover the wage bill for a few seasons.

I hate to remind some of you that money plays a big part in football.

Norwich have give Crewe 4.5m in total for Ashton.

And have received, to date, 7m from West Ham.

That only gives them a profit of 2.5m, they will not be able to buy a good replacement for that money. We've done them up good and proper.

Or look at this way - We sold Defoe for 6M + Zamora, Zamora has outscored Defoe this year.
Ashton is easily going to be better in the Air than Defoe was and with better Midfielders (no disrespect to Norwich) he may well start scoring by the bucketload. Think we will wait and see if he's worth the 7.25 million.
