It's Been Fun...
A compass

Let me introduce myself.

My name's Mark, and I was the first1 Editor of h2g2 (The Earth Edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and then the first2 Editor of the DNA project.

I then became the first Editor to leave, and I'm now spending my time writing, travelling and trying to keep the wolves from the door3. In fact, travelling is in my blood, as you can find out on my personal websites:

Or, if you're really interested, you can find out all about my life as Mark Moxon, Web Developer. Try not to get too excited, now. winkeye

If you've ended up here because you want to talk to me about DNA, then your best bet is to contact Peta. For h2g2 queries, Natalie's your best bet.

I hope you enjoy using h2g2 and DNA as much as I enjoyed being Editor. biggrin

1 From June 1999 to September 2002.
2 From May 2002 to September 2002.
3 Though if you'd like to retain the romantic notion that I've simply popped out for a ham croissant, and will yet return to put in a solid afternoon's work, then that's fine by me.

I Walked from Land's End to John o'Groats! (Aug 8, 2003)
I've finally made it; yesterday I finally finished walking from Land's End to John o'Groats. biggrin

I've walked just 1111 miles in 89 days, walking for 70 of those days at an average of 15.9 miles per day; I've completely worn out a pair of brand new trekking boots and broken in another pair; I've used over 50 blister plasters; I've written 74 articles containing 132,000 words; I've taken 1,129 photographs; I've navigated my way across 54 Ordnance Survey maps; I've walked with food poisoning, sprained leg muscles, inflamed tendons, multiple blisters, whisky hangovers and suspicious friction burns; I've met three other End-to-End walkers; and, most amazingly of all, I've come out the other end just as sane as when I went in.

Which is worrying... weird

One-third of the way there... (Jun 9, 2003)
I've now reached Staffordshire, and in doing so I've completed the first third of my walk from Land's End to John o'Groats. I can't quite believe it! bubbly

In the last month I've injured my foot, destroyed my tent, been barked at by every dog in the south-west, enjoyed myself on top of Brown Willy (ahem), been chased by a whole field of mad bulls, had deep and meaningful conversations with a river, suffered from terrible blisters, witnessed a terrible invasion of static caravans, and sampled many a fine local real ale along the way.

You could say it's been interesting, which is what I wanted. smiley

I'm now heading into Derbyshire and to the Pennine Way, which will keep me company until I reach Scotland, where it's a trivial month's walk via Edinburgh, Glasgow, the West Highland Way, Loch Ness, Inverness and the north-east Highlands... to John o'Groats and a very welcome celebratory pint.

And then I'm going to stay in one place for a very long time. biggrin

Off on a Short Walk (Apr 30, 2003)
Jeez, that went quickly. All those planned weeks of training, all those hours spent trying out the right equipment, poring over maps and checking out weather forecasts... and all of a sudden it's the start of May (well, nearly) and I'm off on a walk from Land's End to John o'Groats.

Gawd. erm

On Tuesday I take the train to Penzance and the bus to Land's End, and on Wednesday I start on the first day's walking. Hopefully it'll take around three months to do the whole thing, but only if I don't get distracted. Which I probably will... there are a lot of different types of ale between tip and tail.

I'd like to say I'll be checking in here with regular progress reports, but realistically I doubt I'll be able to (the route avoids evidence of human beings wherever possible). So I'll see you in three months (or sooner!). ok

Back in England (Jan 22, 2003)
It's raining, it's cold, it's expensive... but it's home and I love it! smiley

I landed at Heathrow on Monday and have spent the last couple of days in utter bliss, enjoying such luxuries as hot showers, bacteria-free food and a comfortable bed. Not only that, I'm back with the love of my life; I think, for the time being, my travelling days are probably over.

And I couldn't be happier! biggrin

Coming Home Soon! (Jan 11, 2003)
Bloody hell, this travelling lark's been taking it out of me. erm After struggling through the hassle and heat of Mali and Senegal, Ghana is a delightful breath of fresh (but humid) air, but, totally unexpectedly, what I really want now is to come home. I'm stunned; I always used to think of myself as a traveller who just happened to be earning money for my next trip (and then h2g2 came along, and it kinda sucked me in for a few years, which was nice smiley ) but now I find that because I'm no longer single, solo travelling is totally different to the experience when I didn't have a partner... and it's different enough for me to prefer being at home.

Oh my god! I'm turning into someone who wants to have a peach bathroom; I guess I'm going to have to rewrite this one:

http://www.moxon.net/about_me/why_i_travel.html

But, interestingly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Coming home because you can't handle the heat, or coming home because you got malaria... well, they both suck. But coming home because you're in love is a damn fine reason to fly back to bloody freezing England.

Remind me of that when I'm being crushed to death on the tube, eh! winkeye
