Subject: i am not able to understand anything about guideml
Posted Feb 18, 2003 by The Thinker
Post: 1

I have been here at h2g2 since late June last year and I still cannot understand how to use your Guideml. Your help pages are no help becauseI cannot understand it. People who have on less than me understand it better than I do. I have very dull personall page compared to other researchers who have been less than I have. I do have computer experience but only to level 1 word processing. I can only understand the very basics of guideml that is how to do paragraphs.

I would like to progess further but your pages are far too complicated understand as do not properly explain it detail but lots of codes on page. I have done something siilar to this but that was a long time ago. When I did very basic dek-top pulishing our tutor only taught usfour codes at a time.

Pleae tell me where I am supposed to find out how to learn the very basics of guideml? I do not want to be have to read 10 different codes, I cannot digest all that information. Perhaps I am thick and I am the only researcher who has these problems. It would be better if you had 1 page to introduce the very basic codes and then have different pages on other more complicated guideml codes, in more methodical manner.<smiley>

Hi there,
Maybe this will help. To see how the Guide ML tags really work, take an article of your choice from the Guide, and in the URL (web address at the top of your screen) replace the A in the entry number with the word "test". For example, A123456 becomes test123456. Then you can see the page in its Guide ML form. It might look complicated with all the tags but it's really not. If you study pages like that, the tags and syntax should make more sense.
I'm in the process of reteaching myself Guide ML because I haven't used it in a while, so I'm no expert, but the basics aren't too hard to grab.
There are many help pages on Guide ML, so I thought maybe the above suggestion would help you place all that information in context.
Hope it helps.

I cannot understand the advice given in the help page footfoot.

I do not think I can do what you suggested studing other peoples guideml as I am using a digibox -h2g2 via tvemail. If I did I still will have problems understanding it.

I really do find it very hard to understand. As it is not taught in a tutorial fashion.

JA not very <disco> about guideml

Just a quick reply to this wonderful human, who can not undertand anyting about the GUIDEML: He/She et al. is absolutely right from the first word to the last. Congratulation!
The text is written by a person(s) who is ( are) talking to himself ( themselfs) with a mind which was not created for communication with humans.
I did not study the Guide Mark Up Language yet. This is a computer Programmer job, and I am not interested in such activity.

I had a good time just tuning in h2g2 and read the conversations, with big laughs and that was it.

The bug got me to write ( I am not a writer) and so I sank in more deeply into this REAP TIDE which is all over in h2g2 " instructions

It became a pain in the ***, ( neck), several times pushing me to the edge for a " cliff-hanger" to quit.----There are many other places: competition for h2g2 (if you will) to communicate.<bruised>

Why is this complicated, incredible, boring stuff surrounding a good idea: ask those who are doing it??? What is it for??? Yeah, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND AND IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING STUFF.<grr>

At this time I am in the process to make an introduction about myself, ( home-page or what?), but I am totally depending on my GURU Whoami? ( the golden currency of h2g2) to " create" such a thing=page for Heaven sake,---and it is very trying work, not FUN at all.<headhurts>

I am convincend All these people working at h2g2 are very clever good humans. But not everybody can share or teach and so we are stuck concerning ML and EXPLANAITIONS TO IT!

However

I SHALL RETURN WITH ONE EXAMPLE TO MAKE STUFF UNDERSTANDABLE! ( Next day).---Cheers! <cheerup> J.W.

<ok> <ta> <smiley> <cheers> Jung Wing.<smiley>

I am finding there are quite alot of researchers who feel the same thing about the Guideml clinic/guideml and even from those who understand how to use it.

I think we really GuideMl tutorial pages/entries rather what we have now and teaching it in a step-by-step like you would in a classroom like situation, well as near as enough.

I'm organising for some pages to be written that will describe how to use GuideML without assuming any prior experience with, for example, HTML.

Would anybody, who would preferably not already use GuideML, like to read the pages once they have all been written to make sure that they're understandable? <smiley>

Here I am : Jung Wing returning with my promise to show to everybody who is interested what happens when there is a firm up to sellig something, and is looking for buyers.

They can not afford if you can figure out what language to speak LIKE GUIDE ML,--- but STEP BY STEP THEY WILL WRITE on your screen how to get to the GOODIES.
This is how I learned and now I am using it, thanks for those people who created a simple communication form for the average person.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE TO EXPLAIN A PROCESS ON YOUR COMPUTER:

How to transfer TEXT from WORD ( Microsoft WORD---TO A PAGE IN H2G2)

COPY AND PASTE. This is all you will get from " wise guys" who know the business but you can knock your head if you don't know how many steps are between COPY AND PASTE.

STEP 1. HIGHLIGHT TEXT IN WORD
2. CLICK EDIT
3. CLICK COPY

TO TRANSFER TO H2G2 ( different domaine)

Step 4. Go Internet
5.adr. BBC
6. CLICK COMMUNICATE
7. CLICK H2G2
8. CLICK MY SPACE (for example only)
9. SCROLL TO ENTRIES
10.CLICK ADD ENTRY
11.SUBJECT ON TOP: WRITE TITLE
12.CLICK ON CURSER ON YOUR EMPTY PAGE
13.CLICK EDIT
14.CLICK PASTE

You see this is what the " wise Guys" don't understand, that there was a time when they had to learn this also, but because they know now, they expect you to know, because they know.
First of all is unfair, second is inconsidred to those who were not born with the kowledge of computer work. Than there are all kinds of computers, like PC and Mac and what ever,-- and different level of thechnical readiness, and you are on the other end of the world and english is not so easy because of the " spelling" problem etc.

It took time to learn to run a PC with the 2000 year advances. Now here you are: start something complietely new: h2g2 Mark Up Language Programming. For what? For an average person who just want to have fun???

So this is it. I have the greatest fun to make layouts, invitations to my exhibitions, make my catalogue with all repros in it,---business cards, etc.---with my PC and 2000 Milleneum addition software,---but I can not make a qualified INTRODUCTION FOR MYSELF at H2g2.

Thanks for your attention. My <headhurts> have ID crisis and I have to go now. Jung Wing. P/S/ don't worry i'll be around.:-D ????

Yes RhoMunQ I have seen your space and I have subscribed to it.

The latest entry I did was very simple as it was a long poem in long big paragraph with one separate line at the end.

I am a full time carer and my time on here is limited as it is. I have only heard about it today through Loup Dargent. I will read it properly but as I said I have other real life duties that must come first before h2g2.

Do you mean my personal space (U203385)? If you do, it's probably worth unsubscribing as I don't think you'd want to comment on the majority of my messages!

Thanks for offering to read through the project, although, right now, the articles linked to are only first drafts. It will probably be about a month before the project's ready to be read - it was only started on Sunday. In the mean time, I'll add you to the credited testers. :-)
