Welcome to Nora's space. I am a science student in my second year at Trinity College Dublin, where I'm studying chemistry and biology. I like history, nature, and languages (mainly English, Russian, and Spanish). I'm an economics and finance junkie, which means I know fairly little about it but love to listen and read. I'm based in Ireland, but grew up mainly in the US.

I play the dijeridu, read fantasy novels¹, poetry, or non-fiction, watch films, listen to jazz², and go on excursions with the Dublin Naturalists' Field Club. Sometimes I even get around to spinning yarn.

Greetings and News in Brief (Oct 26, 2003) I'm back.. again. I'm sorry to be so erratic about h2g2, but RL always seems to get in the way. I stayed in Ireland this summer, going to Fermanagh and Clare Island on nature expeditions. I'm learning to identify lichens and mushrooms as well as vascular plants. I saw "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Finding Nemo" which were both lots of fun. I've only been back in school for about a month, and I'm finding it hard going, but interesting. I bought a secondhand microscope last week, and I'm delighted to have one, even though I haven't got to use it yet. When I have time, and slides, it should let me do more with fungi. (Dec 27, 2002) I just spent a very enjoyable few hours in my all-time favorite bookshop, Memorable Books in Stone Mountain, GA. The place is crammed with books, floor to ceiling, stacked on every available surface, leaving only a narrow, tortuous path. The proprietor is really nice and loves books, and he has a very good nature section. He always gives me a discount; I don't really know why, except that I was very small when I started going there, and we always have a chat. This time I came away with a biology textbook; a book by Gifford Pinchot, the antagonist of John Muir; an old American flora; and a Dover book on tree identification in winter. I also bought a couple of copies of Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac", but those are for friends in Ireland. Have hardly started packing (I keep meaning to join the Procrastinators' Society ), but I will be leaving very early Sunday morning. There is a computer where I'm going, but if you don't hear from me for a while, I'll be busy seeing some friends and getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Best wishes for the season! Since then I've been busy with college stuff, and am likely to remain so. Anyway, hopefully I'll be around more now, if you want to drop in. It's great to see some new smileys! Click here to discuss this (No replies) American exhibition at the National Gallery (Jun 21, 2002) I visited this yesterday (at the new branch on Nassau Street) and really enjoyed it. It goes up to the 1920s, but my favourite was the self-portrait of Rembrandt Peale, right at the beginning in the early 1800s. One of those 'eyes follow you around the room' pictures. There's also a portrait by him of George Washington, which was more true to life than the one used for the dollar bill. I loved the bronze sculptures of the mountain man and the construction worker. The show is mainly one of paintings, though there are several bronzes and marble busts. It's on till the beginning of September, and hasn't been as popular as the Impressionist exhibition, so there's no trouble getting tickets. I'm definitely going back. Avoid the gallery cafe, though: the prices are steep, and the pastries at least do not justify them.
