The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he, by peddling second-rate technology, who led them into it in the first place. Douglas Adams, The Guardian

If you do read the article over at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/12/subscription_only_internet/ and then start contacting your MEP's and MP's to let them know what you think of the UK governments ideas and get your friends to do the same..
In summary the great idea is that Internet Service Providers (ISP's) should be allowed to tailor their offerings so that you only get access to specific web-sites, so if your ISP does not offer Google or the BBC or Wikipedia tough luck in the future imagined by the UK government. Good Times...
(Jan 28, 2009)
On Sunday around the world people gathered for the old ritual of a Burns Supper and among them was me and a group of my oldest friends at an event hosted by Craig (originally from North of the Border). Haggis, Neeps and Tatties was eaten, fine malt whisky drunk, toasts made and poetry read (Craig doing a particularly fine version of "Tam O'Shanter" although I fear my rendering of "The Wounded Hare" was not quite up to the same standard) then the conversation drifted off to the deeds from times of old when the waists of all our trousers was two sizes smaller - the nights that went into mornings, the afters parties where we insulted the stars, the women, the drink, the debauchery, the friends that came and went and about how we were the ultimate party animals and so on. Eventually we left the Dining room and retired up to the TV room to watch some classic Billy Connolly and we the ultimate party animals promptly all fell asleep in front of the TV

The Gopher is dead, long live the Gopher!
(Jun 19, 2008)
With all the commotion this week over the launch of FireFox 3 this week there are a couple of software announcements that might of passed by most of the world but which I found quite exciting...
First, to coincide with the launch of FireFox 3 the Overbite project went public with the first public release of their FireFox 3 add-on that brings "gopherspace back to modern operating systems and browsers". http://gopher.floodgap.com/overbite/
And secondly, the libgopher project reached an important milestone with the announcement of the first feature complete version of their simple library that can handle Gopher pages and parse menu items and such. http://launchpad.net/libgopher

Music and Leaking Radiators
(May 23, 2008)
Given that the car is suffering from some mechanical issues I find my self at a loose end tonight so I am listening to some music and as I have unexpected time on my hands I thought it would be rude not to post - so here I am and guess what? I'm going to share some of my favourite music web-sites with you (gosh, aren't you all ever so lucky?).
http://www.Last.FM gives lots of stats, has a pretty good recommendation system and a great community. This is probably my favourite music site, my page is at http://www.last.fm/user/happydufus/.
http://www.Musicovery.com has to be the prettiest music web site, it uses a mood based system to play music from a wide selection of genres - well worth a visit.
http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/ streams a wild selection of free concert recordings from the last 3.5 (or so) decades - I listened to http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/...ingfield-concert/20050821-5894.html today, much to my embarrassment I felt compelled to give it a five star rating.
And finally a quick mention for the BBC Listen Again pages - worth it if only for Bob Harris, Sean Rowley and Friday Night is Music Night. Click here to discuss this
