Am I right in thinking that this is the island which was the scene of the Battle of Maldon in August 991, when Byrthnoth, Ealdorman of Essex, was defeated by the dabes?

He had them penned up on the island, and they were coming over one by one and being picked off as they did so. Brythnoth, with typical British aplomb, thought this was a bit unsporting and allowed them all to come off the island and form up on the land, so they could all have a real battle ... with predictable results.
