I'm just yearning to go...!
OK, I confess to be francophile - with my favour equally split between Paris & Provence...
The Metro offers many rewards - over and above making it, IMHO, virtually impossible to get lost in Paris. I've actually not once but TWICE (don't tell anybody, please) spent a whole day underground, savouring the many sights and impressions of Le Metro. And to this day, I carry a map of the Parisian underground in my wallet. Yes!
Some years back *trying to avoid remembering how many* we tended to hang out in a bar in a side street to a side street off Place du Tertre. It's surprising how short a distance off such a tourist spot you have to walk to get to something "real"...
'twas quite funny - we were two Danes and after paying for each of our first 2, maybe 3, rounds of Pastis (yep, like it ), the bartender just handed refills over. After a few he did check with us that we indeed did count them ourselves so as to pay a reasonably correct amount before we left (needless to say, we did - Mom would be proud ).
As for getting to Paris, chances are not good - my two next destinations are Florence and the US. And both for work
!
