Helllooo there. I've just read your article on the ECW which I enjoyed. But could I just comment that Fairfax did not resign his command of the NMA because of the Regicide, but because he objected to the invasion of Scotland, indeed his speech to the Committe on the 25th June 1650 makes it clear that this is his reason for leaving.
He may indeed have been using this as a (rather flimsy) excuse, but on balance I think it more likely a reason than the Regicide.
I am NOT having a go, and I apologise for introducing myself in this way

Thanks for the info - I don't suppose you could provide a link to this or article that deals with it?
On a side note I see you are a member of the Sealed Knot - I spent about six years (89 - 95 if memory serves me right) as a member and have many happy memories unfortunately the last year was dominated by a lot of politics (resulting in the regiment I was in being disbanded).
Hi there, the article is on http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A523450
I don't have an on line link, but my immediate reference is Andrew Hopper's book Black Tom for Fairfax' speech. Dr Hopper does include the comment that Fairfax was using this as an excuse and suffered from guilt over the Regicide.
But I believe that Fairfax at this stage still believed in the necessity of the Regicide and genuinely objected to an "invasion" of Scotland, even one aimed at Charles instead of the Scots.
Unfortunately there is still politics around, and it has killed more good Regiments than anything else. Still a great hobby though, come back to the muddy side!
cheers

I knew where my article was
Thanks for the source, I guess it's trip to the library - I don't suppose you have an ISBN number? I've checked my books and they were not much help other than confirming that Fairfax was not in favour of the Regicide.
As to coming back to the muddy-side I do toy the idea occasionally
I really misread that one didn't I?
the book is 'Black Tom' Sir Thomas Fairfax and the English Revolution
The ISBN is 978-0-7190-7109-6
We're at Upton House near Edgehill next weekend, and Belvoir castle the weekend after if you want to rekindle some memories.
