I got a gift from Dagesh of a rather fine cordless optical mouse, a "Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000".

It connects through a small USB dongle, but Linux doesn't see it, it's only supplied with drivers for Windoze and new Macs, and much web searching has failed to turn up any form of Linux support whatsoever.

Can you help, or suggest a source of a driver? It's rather lovely, and I don't want to be defeated by a mouse.

I know this might be a wee bit like teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but ...

What sort of mouse were you using before - was it a USB mouse?
If it wasn't a USB mouse have you edited your xorg.conf to tell it to look for a USB mouse?

Assuming I am teaching my grandmother to suck eggs I'll have a hunt around and see what I can find when I get back (ok, most likely Monday) as I'm off out now

It's a thort, but sadly my previous mouse was USB and worked perfectly.

Not really.

In my situation *none* of the buttons work because the adapter isn't detected.

I've just got back in and need sleep but a couple of quick thoughts...
1: It's not something silly like needing bluetooth support enabled is it?

2: In the mouse section of your xorg.conf try changing the protocol so it reads

Option "Protocol" "Microsoft"
