If you do read the article over at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/12/subscription_only_internet/ and then start contacting your MEP's and MP's to let them know what you think of the UK governments ideas and get your friends to do the same..
In summary the great idea is that Internet Service Providers (ISP's) should be allowed to tailor their offerings so that you only get access to specific web-sites, so if your ISP does not offer Google or the BBC or Wikipedia tough luck in the future imagined by the UK government.

Could it happen?....I mean-do not enough people think it is a great resource( not to mention community resource ) and something that brings people together better than MILLIONS, of our hard earned cash-spent on our behalf--supposidly for the betterment of our society.
It really-to my way of thinkinmg is NOT some kind of left wing-utopian slogan to call for FREE ACCESS to the internet FOR ALL!
Money is the servant of society-not the otherway round-is that not the truth-i think to myself!?
It could happen if people don't let the government know that they consider it unacceptable - the thing is, they have to know about it to protest and unless one has a keen interest in either technology or E.U. politics one is probably not going to find out about this story as the mainstream news outlets are not reporting this story (conspiracy theorist continue from here...). So I'm doing my bit to ensure that people know.

Something sinisterly similar is being attempted here.

Interestingly, US President Obama's economic stimulus bill, which includes requirements that telecom companies receiving funding adhere to net neutrality principles
I guess one has to be vigilant wherever one lives

'tis freedom's price, my friend
"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must undergo the fatigue of supporting it". ~Thomas Paine
Why do people think that freedom includes getting things for free?
I'm currently working on an invention that will fit into your nostrils and meter the air that you breathe. If the government together with global corporations have spent so much to provide us with air then it's simply wrong that we expect to get it for free.
Why not? It worked for water.
I used free as in "free speech" here

Free!
Yes you have a good point , my friend!
I was just expressing a thought-but yes i think that feedom is most definately worth paying money for; i cannot think of a better thing to spend money on, to be honest. As for free everything-well it must be tough if you are trying to sell the software you write for a living , for example-but i would hope there is room enough for eveybody-and of course that DOES mean PAYING for quality software that we use-aswell as using software that is made available for free.
Good karma is priceless
Although we are at severe risk of getting off topic from the original post, I must dispute "of course that DOES mean PAYING for quality software" - As companies such as Red Hat, Novell and Canonical have shown it is perfectly possible to give away quality software and to make your money by providing training and technical support. So "PAYING for quality software" is not the only option.
If freedom is worth paying money for, does that mean the poor do not get to be free?
Arguably they aren't free, but they usually are in theory, which is a good first step.
TRiG.

I actually meant that, free software is, of the highest quality, on a par or maybe better with many brand leaders-BUT there are still quality software worth paying for.
To get back on topic: i am grateful to all the people who have contributed, their time - and energy; to keep the spirit of this whole thing alive; still: money cannot on its own buy that kind of thing-i think.
( like all the money spent on my education, by the goverment-and my Mum and Dad-it does not gaurantee anything-especially good grammer; or a clear a concise meaning - so apologies for my unclear English )
I think the net-is a bastion of free-thought, free-thought of the most responsible kind; i think; judging by, the people i have come accross-while i have been here.
