Are you an Anneke, Anika, Annika or any other Anneke variant? My name is Anneke and I want to hear from you...

How did your parents pick your name?
What do you do?
Are you an artist or musician (amature or professional)?
Do you know of other Anneke/Annika/Anika... (or other variation)?
Do you have a funny/odd story involving your name?

My mother wanted to name me Annie after her mother, but didn't actually like the name Annie. She had a friend whose name was Anneke, and she liked it... I hated the name growing up because everyone else had a "normal" name. I wanted to be called Susan or Cathy... Silly me. Now I like it.

I am an artist, though I make my living at other things. I love music, though cannot sing or play.

As a child growing up in the 1950's and 60's in small-town Canada, I never heard of any other Annekes. I did have a wrapper from a chocolate bar from Estonia called "Anneke". The first Anneke I ever actually met was a little girl whose father broght her in to meet "another Anneke". I could tell she wasn't impressed...

Over the years, I have met more and more people called Anneke or a variation. However, the pronunciation of my name has been a mystery to some. I have been called Harneka, Heineken, Hannukah, Aneek, Anikee... At my graduation from high-school, I was called Aniook....

In my last job (I still work very, very part-time there) at a small art supply store, the other girl who works full-time is Anika. This was a bit of a problem at the beginning because we never knew which of us the boss was calling. She was too young to want to answer to anything else, and I am too old to learn to answer to anything else. Finally, I began to answer to Anneke D. and later to Andy.... Eventually, we just seemed to know who was being called when someone said "Anneke!"

Funnily enough, there was a fellow who worked in the main office, whom we both talked to on the phone many times every day, who didn't know there were two of us... until the day I left. He was most embarrassed as he used to chat me up on the phone and must have been doing the same with her thinking it was me.

The odd thing is, my sister's name is Shirin and she works with another Shirin... People can tell the difference, though. While both of them pronounce their names the same everyone mispronounces it. My sister corrects them and the other one doesn't... So people pronounce my sister's name as Shireen and the other's as Shirin even though they are spelled and (normally) pronounced the same.
