"It's fascinating when people give reasons why one shouldn't be reasonable, proofs that one shouldn't rely on proof, and philosophic arguments against philosophy."

Reason is non-negotiable. Try to argue against it, or to exclude it from some realm of knowledge, and you've already lost the argument, because you're using reason to make your case. And no, this isn't having "faith" in reason (in the same way that some people have faith in miracles), because we don't "believe" in reason; we use reason.
Steven Pinker

"Body am I, and soul"--thus speaks the child. And why should one not speak like children?
But the awakened and knowing say: body am I entirely, and nothing else; and soul is only a word for something about the body.
The body is a great reason, a plurality with one sense, a war and a peace, a herd and a shepherd.
An instrument of your body is also your little reason, my brother, which you call "spirit"--a little instrument and toy of your great reason. . . .
Behind your thoughts and feelings, my brother, there stands a mighty ruler, an unknown sage--whose name is self.
In your body he dwells; he is your body.
There is more reason in your body than in your best wisdom.

Friedrich Nietzsche Thus Spake Zarathustra

When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent.
Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence.
So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind.
-- J. Krishnamurti, Freedom from the Known, pp. 51-52

As a matter of fact, we do observe evolution.  Even humans are still evolving... Well, some are.
- response to a creationist claim that evolution isn't true because we don't observe it happening

"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth - more than ruin - more even than death....
Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible,
thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit.
Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid.
Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."
-- Bertrand Russell

The autobiographical self is the brain state for which the cultural history of humanity most counts.

Imagine our surprise when we noticed that in patient LB the left hemisphere said it believed in God whereas the right hemisphere signaled that it was an atheist.
The inter-trial consistency of this needs to be verified but at the very least it shows that the two hemispheres can simultaneously hold contradictory views on God, an observation that should send shock waves through the theological community.
When a patient like this eventually dies, will one hemisphere end up in hell and the other in heaven?

 --V.S. Ramachandran on the two hemispheres of the brain (A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness)

Philosophy is to be studied, not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true, but rather for the sake of the questions themselves;
because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation;
but above all because, through the greatness of the universe which philosophy contemplates, the mind also is rendered great, and becomes capable of that union with the universe which constitutes its highest good.

 --Russell "The Value of Philosophy"

Late-breaking news from Vatican...
Apr 7, 2009

"The Lord hath come unto me when I could not sleep and He hath said, 'This is totally an option now,'" proclaimed Benedict, taking off his miter to fan himself. "Also, He hath said that some people should probably go out and get this done, like, today, and that they shouldn't tell anyone else about it. Umm...Amen."

Examiner dot com
Mar 16, 2009

"Launched in April 2008, Examiner.com serves 60 major markets across the country and is quickly becoming the premier online brand for local information and events. We are a division of the Clarity Media Group, owned by the Anschutz Company, one of the largest media companies in the country."

This site started showing up in article searches. I noted some of the articles were quite poor, so did a bit of digging, and as a result just added the examiner site to my google blacklist filter.

Turns out Anschutz is owned by the creotard, Philip Frederick Anschutz, a Christian militant and Discovery Institute founder.

I refuse to contribute anything whatsoever to this execrable individual's already obscene wealth or notoriety.

Common Sense - Unsanctified
Mar 13, 2009

Can one honestly say that he is convinced of the existence of a being whose nature is not known, who remains inaccessible to all our senses, and of whose qualities we are constantly assured that they are incomprehensible to us?
In order to persuade me that a being exists, or can exist, he must begin by telling me what this being is;
in order to make me believe the existence or the possibility of such a being, he must tell me things about him which are not contradictory, and which do not destroy one another;
finally, in order to convince me fully of the existence of this being, he must tell me things about him which I can comprehend, and prove to me that it is impossible that the being to whom he attributes these qualities does not exist.

A thing is impossible when it is composed of two ideas so antagonistic, that we can not think of them at the same time.
Evidence can be relied on only when confirmed by the constant testimony of our senses, which alone give birth to ideas, and enable us to judge of their conformity or of their incompatibility.
That which exists necessarily, is that of which the non-existence would imply contradiction.
These principles, universally recognized, are at fault when the question of the existence of God is considered;
what has been said of Him is either unintelligible or perfectly contradictory;
and for this reason must appear impossible to every man of common sense.

Baron d'Holbach

Le Bon Sens, 1772

Delusion Day
Feb 19, 2009

"March 6th has been chosen as Faith of Britain Day because March is a time of seeing light emerging from the darkness of Winter, therefore emphasising hope in an unsure world. Numerologically this date is symbolic because the 3rd month, the 6th day and the 9th year are all multiples of 3 which is about balance - which is what we strive to achieve as humans. The time, 11.00am is a master number, or a powerful 2 (1 + 1) which is the duality of the inner and outer self, encouraging us to look within to find solutions."

Lucifer's Hammer revisited

"An asteroid that had initially been deemed harmless has turned out to have a slim chance of hitting Earth in 160 years. While that might seem a distant threat, there's far less time available to deflect it off course."

yikes

That asteroid will likely miss.

Just.

After which the religiots can offer a prayer:

"Thank you, Lord, for saving us from the rock you sent." grovel
