| | Still on an intergalactic cruise... | |
Once upon a nostalgic clichée, I worked as Deputy Editor for H2G2. Then I had some fun writing technical manuals, playing the double bass and looking after monkeys, but this didn't work out as they'd keep launching themselves off the E string and frolicking on my computer keyboard1. I'm now gainfully employed as a writer and researcher (and occasional musician and web monkey), and am very much enjoying what life is doing at the moment. "Find (Quite) interesting stuff, meet interesting people, and write about it." Could there be anything more exciting to do with one's life? It probably felt the same to medieval explorers, hacking their way through jungles in search of cities of gold, except that jungles are at least as interesting as cities... With any luck, I shall have a baby daughter arriving in early July, which I am very, very excited about. I never thought I would say this (much less mean it), but responsibility is, at last, something I welcome with open arms, invite in and give my best wine to. Although our GP doesn't recommend we take this literally. I've been a Douglas Adams fan since I could read (or listen or see), and have been hanging out on Floor 42 (as 'beeline') for nearly six years now. Come. Enjoy fresh pasta. Discuss everything (and life and the universe, obviously). 1 The only laptop dancers I can afford.

That's okay then.
Hey, I'd forgotten how nice it is here.
And now... the end is near... Dec 18, 2001
So,
Just a brief note to say that on January 7th, Anna will be returning from her maternity leave to reclaim her rightful position as Deputy Editor of h2g2, and consequently, I'll be shot into space for NASA target practice.
I'd just like to say that it's been a pleasure working with you all - it's been entertaining, enlightening and occasionally surreal. I will, it seems, be working part-time as a Sub, though, so I may get to retain my Italic status, but the stately duties will be left in the capable hands of Anna, Sam and Ashley. Well, Anna at least.
I'm off to make bizarre electronic music and surreal digital films for a couple of months, so expect to see me living underneath a bridge sometime in the near future...
Cheers everyone!
Chris
Holiday, sweet holiday... Dec 6, 2001
This weekend I shall be setting off with the girl for southern Spain. We'll be spending a week walking in the Sierra Aitana, eating bread, ham and olives, drinking wine, and generally living a delightfully non-technological life.
The deal is that we ankle nonchalantly through the mountains from hotel to restaurant to hotel with small day-packs for water, cameras, etc, and our heavy luggage is carted around for us in a van. Civilised, neh?
Apparently, the temperature there ranges from 15 to 25 degrees C, so it'll be pleasantly warm (and dry). I think I remember the sun - big orangey-yellow thing in the sky, right?
Have a fun week without me.
Two weeks Sep 24, 2001
I did have a little American flag [**=] in my nickname, but since the mourning is now 'officially over', it's gone. I saw it on someone else's nickname a week or so ago, and did the only decent thing - stole it. It seemed rather a good thing to have there.
What a two weeks it's been, though. I've been astonishingly impressed by the number of people being comforting and welcoming here, and by the depth of some of the political discussion.
It's an honour to work on a site where people can really help each other and learn a little bit more about the world: governments, people, religions, politics - everything. And to be good and silly sometimes as well...
Slightly Scilly Party Jul 31, 2001
It was a week of unrestrained and thoroughly committed sitting-around-on-beaches, eating-of-fresh-fish, drinking-of-fine-wines-and-beers, pootling-about-amongst-islands-in-a-boat, guffawing with good friends, and saving-up-of-hyphens.
I'm brown, fit, healthy and wide-eyed again. Did I mention brown?
I also took 2 hours of quality video footage and about 320 photos with my new DVcam, which is, to understate it massively, exceptionally fine. Now to bore the bejeezus out of my parents with the 'Director's (un)Cut'.
I'd say it's nice to be back, but I'm afraid nothing except an anarcho-cynicalist cyber-arsonist can hold a candle to real life...
