Smudger R.N.

I found this site by accident while reading the article on the Pacific Glory. The reason I was reading the article was that I was on HMS ZULU at the time of that rescue mission, and it has stuck in my memory all these years.

Writing with a pen

My name is Smudger, and you have probably guessed already I was in the R.N.for a while. After that I was in the oil industry for some 14years starting off as a welder, then welding instructor then inspector and ended up doing welding engineering. The work took me all over from the North Sea and several construction sites in the U.K. To working overseas in Russia, Turkey and Egypt.

A welder

It was upon returning from overseas that I found the industry basically closed down. So after a spell of self employment, I joined the ambulance service. It was while I was working there that I received the injury that finished my working career.

Electrocution

So now I have more time to try and master this computer? if you ever come across me in this site, remember that you will be dealing with a Newbie (as we are affectionately called on this site) So your patience would be appreciated? I am however improving my computer skills every day due to all the help and advice given to me by many of the fellow researchers on this wonderful site. I like music from the 1960-1970, surfing the net,and a good comedy or action film, and driving, which I have been doing since I was twelve. I have had to sit and pass several driving tests including emergency driving, which I did when I joined the ambulance service, I sat and passed the advanced driving test back in the eighties, and a Taxi driving test as well. My dislikes are politicians, false people and incompetence in general. Feel free to have a look through my Snippets and Poems from The Post in the drop down menus below.

Unblocking a Mobile Phone.

I am trying to unblock Mk2s mobile phone, so that she can be on the same cheap network as I am on, as its only 8p a minute to all networks and land lines and 4p a text!

So I found this sire called "Unblockitfree" and went through filling out four pages of information and giving the IMEI number, only to be asked on page page 5 to pay for the unblock codewah

I mean, why call it "unblockitfree" when they know dam well that they are going to charge yougrr
The worst part of it all, is that her phone is quite a modern one, compared to mine, and I just know that they will charge me around £15-£20 for unblocking itsadface

My one only cost me £6 to do, and I must admit, I use it a lot more than I did before, knowing that its a fraction of what I was paying with that old Network.

Then today while I was shopping in ASDA, I noticed that they are selling phones that are already unblocked, so all you have to do is put their Sim card, and you are offok
So, now I must think about either unblocking her phone, or buy one which is already unblocked, and there was me thinking that everything was easier now in this new digital agewinkeye

cheers Smudger.

Windows 7

Hey! we have just installed Windows 7 Ultimate onto my old desk top computer! Its great and runs a lot faster than Vista, which I have on my lap top, it even found and installed all the drivers it needed.
If it could not find any item, it posted up a link to the page I needed!

I still have a few programs to install, but after spending most of the afternoon on it, I came off for a break.
So I think I will be using the old desk top a lot more nowwinkeye

cheers Smudger.

Windows 7
Oct 24, 2009

So we now have Windows 7 being launched yesterday, surprised no one mentioned it really. It wont be long before they stop supporting Windows XP. Which is a pity, as since my old desk top has only got 1Gb of RAM, XP runs perfectly well on it.

As for my lap top, well it has Vista and it took me while to get used to that, so why do they keep bringing out with these new operating systems, it wouldn't have anything to do with making money would it?winkeye

No, I didn't think so, its MS making sure that we all have the latest technologylaugh
I suppose it will come with all the usual promises of running faster, never crashing and making sure that our on line time will be more pleasurablewinkeye

cheers Smudger.

Computers.
Sep 7, 2009

I was just archiving some of my Snippets into the external hard drive, that Mk2 gave last Christmas, and I just clicked on one already there and got a shock!

It was blank, so were a lot of the others?? It seems my copy of Word is in doubt, and our lad says I need a newer version in order to open all those blank ones>
So much for backing up all our data then, even the copies that I had burnt to disc were no good wither, it opens some of them, but not them all.

So we installed Word 2007 which I had on disc, and that didn't open them either, so it looks like the only place where they ALL are, is in here, which is rather fitting in a way as I wrote them for thepost on here.

So if any technical minded person reads this, could they please tell me what I need to do, so that I can read all the archived ones?

A slightly frustrated silver surfer will be most impressed if that could happenwinkeye

Fairwell To Micheal.
Jul 7, 2009

We watched that tribute to Michael Jackson tonight on Sky News, it was a very moving experience with respects coming from a lot of people who had the good fortune to actually know him personally.
I had no idea that he gave so much to charity and was involved in charitable work, or that he touched so many peoples hearts. He will be sadly missed. rose
Cheers, Smudger.
