Why I Love Neutrinos

Did you know that as you read this, billions upon billions of tiny little particles are zipping right through your body? These little particles zip around at close to the speed of light, have very little rest mass, and rarely, if ever, interact with normal matter. They are so small that they can pass right through the empty space that surrounds any given atom. They originate from the sun, travel here, and continue, as if the earth were never there. Where do they go? Perhaps on grand adventures. rocket They can travel for long distances. If we were traveling that fast, 50 light years would seemingly appear to be only one light year. They can live for a long time. If we were traveling that fast, a journey of 50 light years would only age us one year. They are so tiny that if they were ever to interact with our bodies as they zip through, we would never be able to feel it. run How do we know they are there? We've measured them. Far below the earth sit huge tanks of cleaning fluid. Occasionally, one of these tiny little guys hits an atom, and it changes the chemical composition of the fluid slightly and produces a flash of light star . We can detect about eight per month, though in theory it's supposed to be three times that amount. What are these little, enigmatic particles? They are neutrinos. They are my favorite particle of all time. Just ask me why, and I'll tell you: "What other particle originates in the sun, travels through your body, and exits through the earth as if it were never there?" This is why I love neutrinos. Of course, that fact that I'm a Physics major who plans on becoming an astronomer may have NOTHING to do with it...but you know, it could be the fact that they are dang cool, too. biggrin

scientist You might be a physicist if...

star You refer to your weight as "rest mass"
star You name things after elementary particles
star You regularly make cracks about things reaching relatavisitc speeds
star You rip on movies that disobey or abuse the laws of physics
star You didn't even realize there WAS a Humanities building, much less ever been there...
star You can't figure out why anyone would consider social sciences a worthwhile endeavor
star Your dog's name is "Dog" and your cat's name is "Cat"
star You refer to the brake on your car as the "slower-downer"
star Symmetry is an obessession, not just a passion
star You give everything you own pointless acronyms
star You love to strip electrons off stairs and subsequently ground them
star You see no difference between an orgasm and an intense dicussion of string theory
star You think M-theory is BETTER than sex
star You can see the fourth spatial dimension
star You think "drag" is air friction
star You can conduct highly precise experiments and calculate complex differential equations yet still have difficulty matching your clothes
star You can think of at least three quantities for any given symbol

...Umm, yeah, I'm terrible at these things, but maybe I'll think of more.

Ten Reasons Why I love the Japanese (though my soul belongs to Russia):
10. Akira is possibly one of the finest movies ever made.
9. Spike Spiegal makes me sweat drool
8. Isao Tomita: he does the best rendition of Mussorgsky ever! I would call him, spacey new-age [here is his ufo this is he (perhaps) martiansmile this is his planet planet and, uhhh...Full Moon! fullmoon ]
7. Kikaider: they can make an animated robot look attractive--wow, now THAT is skill wow
6. Iron Chef: love the yellow pepper at the beginning, the live orchestra and the way they always begin with, "If memory serves me right..."
5. One of my favorite Simpsons episodes: "I know nothing...I am product of American education system..."
4. Japanese game shows: chopsticks, ping-pong balls, 'nuff said
3. Samurai Jack: good story, animation, plus, he's not bad-looking winkeye
2. Inu Yasha: see #3, plus, it's addicting
1. Yatta! Yatta! Yatta!: Anyone got a fig leaf? Oh! Here comes Lovey-Dovey with one now peacedove (see my list of websites)

Good Websites I Know and Love...has moved to a guide entry! It was too unwieldy to be included in my intro, now it has room to roam and be free! Check it out, and add suggestions, please!

Philosophical Musings
Feb 18, 2004

So, recently I've been in this sort of awakening, and my philosophical brain has been working overtime. Some of the results of my wanderings:
1. If gravitons travel at the speed of light, then they do not age, and they have always existed (as long as the universe has existed). What prevented them from becoming the dominant force of the universe? If they are massless, then they only exist in time.
2. If something only exists in time, it has no mass, but it has to have force (since time necessarily implies dynamics, and a force is a dynamic quality). Therefore, shouldn't all forces only exist in time? Then, shouldn't all force particles exist only in time (gravitons, photons, gluons and that other -on that I can't remember)?
3. If parallel universes exist, would there exist a world that was not created by God? How could God create the universe and not create it at the same time? Or is God not creating the universe not a possiblitity? Or is God creating the universe only referring to the space that contains all of the mulitiverses, and so would circumvent this arguement?
4. Why do people always assume that there is a departure between science (really is physics) and religion? I have never seen how science is incompatible with religion, especially with Christianity. In fact, the structure and symmetry of the universe makes me believe in God all the more, since I see the grand design and the beauty of how it all works together.
5. Is there something in the universe that only exists in space? This would be an object with a finite mass and extension, but no dynamical properties (it could not change or evolve over time). Or maybe it's something like the gravitational constant or the speed of light, which does not depend on time (depending on who you talk to).
6. If there is no universal time, will the universe die out all at once, or little areas by little areas? When is it apparent that the universe is dead? When the temperature is absolute zero and all the energy is dissapated? Would photons then not exist anymore, since they are pure energy?

Sorry it's so long! Like I said, my brain's been working overtime! Maybe I should ask somebody and see what they think... huh

A funny thing happened in the school cafeteria...
Feb 11, 2004

Yesterday was wierd. Chinaman came over to me and started talking to me as if there wasn't anything wierd between us. How the hell am I supposed to be mad at him, when he was nice to me? grr This is why I am a physics major--the less I have to deal with irrational people behavior, the better. Otherwise, I just get confused. huh

Recent Updates
Jan 21, 2004

So, my nonexistent readers are wondering, what has been happening in the life of Neutrino since she last posted? Well, I shall oblige. About two weeks ago, my parakeet got loose outside and we chased him (her, actually) for about 1 1/2 hours before we finally caught him (her) on our neighbor's roof. Caused a great deal of stress on my part, and I suffered a panic attack. That same night, I went to my friend's apt. where I proceeded to get wildly drunk and out-of-control. I got caught the next morning with a hangover by me mom, and I vow to not drink anymore (we'll see how long that lasts <crosses fingers> ). I went to see my grandmother who lives four hours away. Had a lot of fun there. Started to really get into Anime, and just discovered Cowboy Bebop and Scrapped Princess (is it wrong to lust after cartoon characters? Damn, Spike makes me sweat!).

The big news, of course, is that I'm finally getting treated for depression/anxiety. I'm so sick of all this crap in my soul, and I'm looking forward to getting rid of it. Things look good on this front, I'll be seeing a therapist and be taking medication (probably, I haven't recieved a prescription yet). Other than that, I start classes soon, and I look forward to seeing all my Macster friends again. So, there you go, my nonexistent readers, enjoy.

Drunken Lullabies, Pt. 2
Jan 6, 2004

Hmmm...holidays, end-of-term, and nothing to do? Get drunk! ale bubbly That's what I did!! End of term party, me and Isabelle shaking booty, Michelle and I having chugging contests, me getting bitchy...hahaha. That was fun. The best was yet to come, of course. I tried IM'ing my friend while drunk...THAT was classic. thooasd drujnkk to oytople hahaha.

New Year's was a blast! Went to Dianna's cousin's house. More booty-shakin', and six or seven shots later, I'm completely loopy and in the mood to PARTY!! So party I did, man, asian guys are HOT!!! I was so gone, but I managed NOT to puke or get a hang-over, go me!

In other news, have only seen ROTK only once, midnight showing, which was a generally bad idea, but worth it in the end (to round out the trilogy, of course). Got through the semester relatively unscathed, and am now on J-term break. Working too much, but my co-workers make it better, especially when Patrick, Tony, Nona, Ray, and the other good people work. Love life? Nah, except Bee (in my drunken revelrie, I pretended he was mine, but I knew better winkeye ) and Patrick from work (I'll give you a hint, loveblush I almost killed him, but oh, well, maybe he'll get the hint someday!) Three weeks of break left and still have seen no one from high school, I better get my ass moving! Christmas was good, too, quiet and content, except, man, can my relatives whine! Other than that, been playing too much Sims, I guess. Keeping up on the fiddle, and everything else. smiley Bottoms up! bubbly
