Hi, it's great to have you visit. My name's Alastair and I live in Scotland. I'm fairly new to h2g2 so I'm still finding my way. Now, what to say here? My name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic version of "Alexander". I enjoy folk dancing and I'm crazy about anything to do with space exploration. I'm also interested in environmental issues, science and technology, Gaia theory, Chaos theory and similar topics. I'm quite interested in I Ching, especially the patterns and models it proposes for that whole 'Life, the Universe and Everything' business. I enjoy the ridiculous - it's a basic requirement for health, but there are some ridiculous people who p**s me off. Ivor Cutler is my hero. I don't have a computer, so I use an Internet Cafe. I stay with my partner Jim, who has three daughters and five grandchildren although he's really quite young. Here's my Mum's website. I look quite like her, except she doesn't have a beard. By the way, my Mum's a writer and loves people saying hello and talking about creative things, and borrowing her books from the library. Greetings to you, and may your life bring you good things today.

Horrible Ornament
Apr 15, 2002

I have just bought a horrible ornament. It's the ugliest thing I have ever seen, I wish you could see a photo of it. It consists of a monkey sitting on a turtle's back. The monkey is mean-looking and emaciated with wide, staring eyes and ears that stick out. Its hair is brownish yellow with dark brown streaks. Its long, thin tail is looped around the turtle's throat and it's using both hands to pull its tail tighter. The turtle is dark green with a pink shell. Its head is pulled up by the monkey's tail and its pink tongue shows as it gasps for air. The turtle is crawling on yellow sand. The whole piece is ceramic, about 20cm tall. I look at it and wonder "Why?". Do you have anything as ugly, or do you know the story behind the monkey and turtle?
