Hello to anyone who drops by

Welcome to Z's User page (2009) Edition

Nice of you to drop round, Unknown Visitor will you have a coffee . After you've visited me why not take a look at some of the places I can be found on h2g2?

I really ourght to update my user page. When I first wrote it I was a 21 year old medical student. Now I'm a 28 year old Doctor, and not even a Junior one any more. I now have the rather odd status of being a 'middle grade'. I'm training to be a Geriatrician, which is the Non-PC term for 'Consultant Physician with a Special Interest in Care of the Elderly. Some people consider Geriatrics to be an offensive term, though I've never met an older person who actually minded.

I used to be called Z, but then I married A Girl Called Ben (of this parish) and we changed our online names to Zen.

Unknown Visitor, yes you. Are you sick of 'What did you last eat?' and '5 word postings only please' on ask h2g2? then why not visit The Forum, yes not only a forum, the Forum. - One of my favourite places on h2g2.

Do you have a question about Science? Then pop along to SEx where science is explained in a friendly fashion.

Click here to visit The Forum.
Wot Z says

Unknown Visitor I'd like to hear from you, just click on the button to leave me a message... If you're new it isn't considered rude to say hello to strangers we like it. A lot

Talk to Z

E mail me at z_h2g2 at yahoo dot co dot uk, the same address is my MSN log in, I'm pretty much always on MSN.

I'm a real live human being as well as a collection of pixles, if you want to talk to me in real life I'm a regular at H2G2 meets.

This is my old user page.

Welcome to Z's not so new user page (2005 Edition)

I'm a scout, which means that I encourage writers in Peer Review to improve their entries, and reccomend the best ones to the Edited Guide. If you're a writer who's new to the Guide and you'd like advice then don't hesitate to ask me. Technially wise I'll pick all the entries that are well written.

Or drop by, to find a friendly person all ready to help you write for the Edited Guide

As a sub editor usualy I do all sorts of entries, though I find ones on Medicine, History, and Books most interesting.

For the one reader that was wondering, Z is what my parents wanted to call me, 1

I'm a Junior Doctor, though thanks to the European Working Time Directive not especially tired or overworked.

Just so you know it's Z, spelt Z, not Zed, and prounced Zed, not Zee. At other times it's Steve, but I try to keep that awkward interfering with real life to a minimun

Dull Life Story that wouldn't Interest anyone combined with a plug for some of my entries!

I'm from Skelmerdale, Lancashire, in the Uk as my parents are part of the Transcendental Meditation Movement, where I spent much of my childhood reading books by Enid Blyton. As I got into medical school I moved to Birmingham, since I moved here I have spent far to much time drinking on the Birmingham Gay Scence, and waiting at New Street Station. But I have also learnt some things to consider when reading medical research and some things about the sounds the heart makes, and lots of things about mental illness and the immune system In my holidays I would do more interrailingif I had more money.

Z's Dilema.

I was on call a few days ago when I had a thought, a thought that I was scared to write down or say out loud because that would mean that it was true.

So I wrote it down on a shiny desk and wiped it off with a tissue before anyone could notice.

'I want to be an intensivist'

I'm training to be a geriatrician. I have a training number, a training job, and they're paying for me to do an MSc. I'm darn lucky to get all of these. I know a lot of people who I respect really went out of their way to help me.

The thing is that I'm starting to get worryingly drawn towards the guys in blue scrubs with really exiciting toys. Intensive care that is.

The thing is I really really really enjoy looking after very sick people. This is the bit of the job most people really hate. In the last few months I've developed the skill of not only staying calm myself but when I arrive to see a very sick person everyone else starts to calm down.

I'd assumed that if I wanted to do ITU I would have to go back to being an SHO in anaesthetics and do another lot of Royal College Exams, and also spend a long time learning how to give a general anaesthetic. Which I have zero interest in doing.

But apparently there's couple of jobs around that I could get where I would be able to become a consultant in - wait for it

1. General (Internal) Medicine
2. Geriatric Medicine
3. Intensive care.

So what was an idle fantasty when I was bored in falls clinic and doing yet another stroke ward round is now a possiblity.

The advantages are.

It's just so cool and sexy, and they have really shiny machines. Oh and I would get to make people better.

I think I'd be good at it.

The disadvantages are:

1. It might make me unemployable - I could end up too specialised.
2. It would make it more difficult to get a PhD - just in terms of the sheer amount of time.
3. It wouuld mean doing nights and weekends until I'm 65. Or perhaps 75.

My boss has got te idea that I'm a bit bored of geriatric medicine thinks I just have to chill and spend more time, and move out of my comfort zone. For instance my comfort zone is ITU more than it is Falls Clinic.

Run Z Run.
Oct 19, 2009

Some of you may have noticed I am slightly less fat than I used to be. In a mission to stay thin I have noticed that I enjoy running and have decided to do more of it. So a while back I decided to enter a 5k 'fun run' in December. Today was the 1st day I actually managed to run 5k without stopping though it was at a hopelessly slow pace. Still if I keep it up i should be able to get a respectable speed.

I've just read..
Sep 28, 2009

I've finally finished 'God's War' an history of The Crusades by Christpher Tynerman.

Interesting book, lots of food for thought, but I did find it a very difficult read. It was written in a very academic style - but I was trying to read it for 'fun'.

I wonder why the Christian Colonisation of the Holy Land failed where other colonisation has succeeded?

Another H2G2 wedding.

Photies to follow, when we get around to scanning them in.
