Memory of an Epiphany

When I was in school and first read the line "What is so rare as a day in June" I recall thinking "Well it's a little warm for my taste, but to each his own." In June of 1975 I stood in Kensington Gardens on a beautiful cool-but-sunny kind of day and was struck speechless by a realization: he wasn't talking about Texas!

Daylight Savings Time
May 27, 2001

Changing one's mind completely about something, a genuine 180 degree turn, should be a fairly traumatic event, and, one might suppose, a gradual one. Over time doubts should develop until they reach the critical stage of "What a fool I've been!" But it doesn't seem to work that way. Yesterday I was vehemently opposed to Daylight Savings Time. Today, not.

For years I began a rant as soon as the date for setting clocks forward was announced. "If people want to mow their lawns at 7PM and pretend it's 8PM, why do they have to involve me?" I said, loudly and frequently. But ... this winter I was alone in the house for the first time, and in the evening the house gets dark, even with the lights on. Now, at the end of May, the sun is only beginning to set at 9PM. I have light all evening. I walk my dog before bed and watch the sunset. And I like it, that's all. It's a silly idea, and I like it anyway.
