Everyone, apparently, has a book in them somewhere. In my case, I suspect it's little more than a pamphlet and it's lodged - so far as I can tell - somewhere in my small intestine. So for now I suppose this kind of meandering, stream-of-consciousness stuff is going to delineate the modest limits of my authorial ambitions. Ho hum...
Still; I've got more wit than Richard Whiteley, I make my bed better than Tracy Emin, and my command of the English language is superior to that of almost any BBC weather presenter.
So stick around, I'm sure to say something interesting sooner or later - it's the law of averages. When it happens, it'll be glorious, and I'll do my best to namecheck you during my "Warhol's 15". Meanwhile, here is eine kleine lifftmusik...

There was a new episode of "Doctor Who" tonight. Now, that doesn't happen every day. Or, indeed, every decade.
This is going to sound so stupid, but I was really worried that I might love it. Why? Because they shouldn't be making "Doctor Who" for me. I'm nearly thirty-seven. Ten-year-old kids should love "Doctor Who"; I should just like it. If the kids love it, it'll go on forever. If I love it, it'll be dead after two series.
And... I liked it!
I shivered, I laughed, I punched the air, I cringed, I had my heart in my mouth, I had my head in my hands... exactly how I remember it! Nice one, Russ...
Today's ten-year-olds should lap it up - and then feel slightly embarrassed, but still secretly grateful, in their late thirties. That'll do nicely.

Preaching to the Incontrovertible

Jonathan Miller's "A Brief History of Disbelief" is airing on BBCtv, and I find myself avoiding it. Rather like reading the Guardian or watching "Fahrenheit 9/11", I fear the intellectual blunting that may result from having my prejudices pandered to. Also, to be honest, I worry that it might be too extreme, or not extreme enough, or any other kind of not-made-by-me.
However, the opportunity for renewed theological discussion with friends has revealed a startling possibility; that the most passionate and involved of modern thinkers may be the agnostics. Amongst all the freedoms enjoyed by secular Britons, the right NOT to have an opinion seems to be the most cherished of all. Along with the more familiar nature of this idea in modern political thought, I sense the coming of a new age; not a Golden Age of Enlightenment, but a Beige Age of Apathy and meek consensus.
For the record, I don't like it.

...you write in it once and then forget it for years!
Well, in the last year I've learned quite a lot about tropical fishkeeping, and the Republic of Cuba, where I spent the early part of December 2003. Perhaps I'll upload a mojito recipe...
I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up.

Some poor deluded fool at the office seems to have mistaken my sream-of-unconsciousness for intelligible prose, and dumped it straight into the "Kissing With Confidence" article pretty much un-edited. Thus I lose my Edited Guide virginity in a somewhat apt context. Well, there's plenty more where that came from, guys.
