Malchus Giersch

Hello, welcome the personal space of Malchus Giersch (aka Molch).

This nickname was given to me by my former girlfriend, who's my wife by now (not the other way round). Molch is a German name of the animal salamander. I am very fond of water, easily annoyed, but often funny and can be very lazy if not threatened. I am also loyal to my habitat, which means I could not easily live in any other city than my hometown Cologne.

Now the similarities with this animal get less obvious. Once I wanted to be the greatest actor in Germany. Today, if everything turns out, I want to become a writer and let other people do the acting; of course a less sophisticated job would also be appreciated. I'll start looking for it soon.

I like to communicate with other individuals, so it was only a question of time before I moved into H2G2. The internet has made a much more happy individual, as I finally found all the information about cultural phenomena that shaped my youth and were not important enough for books to be written about, let alone fanclubs in my area to be opened.

Since 1998, my homepage on Spliff1 is online. The page has already made small fame (or rather large fame among the small amount of true followers of this exceptional band). It is called Magie's Spliff Homepage.

My main hobbies are playing adventure games, reading, movies, pop music and cities, my favourites being respectively The Last Express, Shopgirl by Steve Martin (currently), A fish called Wanda, Spliff (see above), and, finally, London, Cologne (my home town) and Munich. You can expect some entries on these subjects soon.

I am finishing university and looking for an interesting job, hopefully related to the fields of interest mentioned above.

1 A famous German popband from the eighties, best known outside Germany for their album The Spliff Radio Show (1980).

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
May 30, 2001

Today, as the dust has somehow settled for me, I looked through the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy books again, and had to laugh immediately about two things I never noticed before – one strange and one funny.
I am rather obsessed with dates, and was more so in my teens and twens. So, generally, I wrote or stamped the date on anything I bought or received as a present. I looked through the four part trilogy of „Hitch Hiker's“ (The Pan edition with the quartered pictures of the fish etc. on the cover) and found out that I posses them exactly – and that's the strange thing – since May 11th 1991. stiffdrink
The genuinely funny thing is that only now I noticed that the red and green dots on the spine of the books form, if they are put side by side, the number 42. biggrin
I know how fed up Douglas has been with the endless academic discussions on this number, but it sure has one meaning: It is a common denominator for all people who share DNA's view on our earth and his sense of humor. Thus 42 could have found no better place than on the back of his books. Perhaps he thought so aswell...
