| | YERTIZ! | | Hello there Unknown Visitor, and welcome to the home of Parrferris!
I'm Parrferris, I'm now living once more in Torbay (the alleged English Riviera), but for a couple of years I moved to the Far East - the far east of Devon, that is, where I wrote this entry of which I'm rather proud. I work about 80 hours a week for the UK's fifth largest supermarket chain, about which I'm rather less happy. I walk a lot, I eat a lot, I watch too much telly and I've been an unapologetic Doctor Who fan all my life (long before it became fashionable). And I don't get to spend enough time on h2g2! This is all you probably need to know about me; in fact it's probably all there is to know!
If you want to get a clearer picture of me, imagine:
The calm serenity of Basil Fawlty
The level temper of Victor Meldrew
The sophistication of Frank Spencer
The open-minded liberalism of Alf Garnett
The good looks of Davros
The athletic physique of Jabba the Hutt
The intelligence of Father Dougal
The sexual magnetism of Mr Bean
The cheerful optimism of Marvin
I joined h2g2 just before the site disappeared, so I spent my first few weeks on the Yahboo chat site (it seems so long ago now). Despite everything, I managed to make friends with some splendid people, most of whom are now back here in Auntie's ample bosom. Edited Enties To save scrolling down, here are the pitifully few edited entries I have contributed to the Guide. Hopefully, seeing the brevity of this list every time I look at my PS will shame me into writing more! Scrumpy (Feb 25, 2002) Solo, could probably do with updating, Gus Honeybun - Puppet (Jun 12, 2002) Solo, A hero! Sidmouth and The Sid Valley, Devon, England. (Nov 14, 2005) Solo, my favourite entry about one of my favourite places Clotted Cream (March 17, 2008) Solo Anyone who knows me would think it inevitable that I would write this entry eventually. Only my fourth solo entry in about seven years on h2g2 - well, I'm a slow writer! Devon, UK (Nov 15, 1999) Contributor The date's misleading, as in fact I was peripherally involved in rewriting the whole entry from scratch in 2006 Great Walks (Mar 23, 2001) Contributor (actually, precisely one word of this is mine so I don't really deserve any credit - I'll take it where I can get it, though!) Revels - Chocolates That Surprise (Oct 26, 2006) Contributor Great Radio Shows (Jun 27, 2003) Contributor Wonderful Rivers (Jun 20, 2003) Contributor, the bit about the Dart, of course. Meet Fred the Badger I am 'Keeper of Badgers'!
It is my duty to oversee all the many badger-related issues on H2G2, and to protect all the badgers that live within the guide. The oldest and wisest of these brocks is Fred, and the youngest addition to the h2g2 sett is little Elly. Visit the full list of all Keepers Devon I'm lucky enough to live in England's lovliest county, Devon. I'm originally from Dartmouth an ancient borough and port in the south of the county. Unfortunately, work forced me to move just a few miles up the line to Paignton, the least attractive of the three Torbay towns, and part of one of Britain's most popular seaside resorts, where I lived for several years. Fate then dealt me a kinder hand, as the job took me to Sidmouth, a beautiful seaside town stuck in a timewarp. Most recently I returned to work in Dartmouth, but I'm currently living in Brixham (which I've now decided is the second-least attractive Torbay town, plus it smells of fish). To learn more about the most beautiful place in the world, why not visit BBC Devon Online for news, features and pictures.

For several years as a kid, I lived in the pretty Yorkshire town of Holmfirth which has probably the best community website I have seen. The town is, of course, best known as the location for the long-running comedy series Last of the Summer Wine
Later, my family moved to Gwynedd. As a teenager I was involved in the campaign to rebuild the nearby Welsh Highland Railway. At last progress is being made, from Caernarfon in the north and from Porthmadog in the south.

Being a sucker for odd traditions I've always wanted to see this event, but I see that this year's event has been the subject of controversy. Whether 'cheating' is, strictly speaking, possible in a game with (almost) no rules I'm not sure!

I love this quote from another page: "What rules there are say motor vehicles are not allowed and manslaughter is illegal"
In those days it took tens and twos... Feb 16, 2008
Just found this reference to the UK's 'least used phone box'. It presumably gained this dubious distinction since I stopped using it on a regular basis when I lived just up the lane in the Eighties. For some reason the kiosk was sited in a field rather than on the road, an odd arrangement I've never seen anywhere else. I often used it to call my friends rather than have to beg the use of the house phone and have my conversation overheard by my parents.

http://icnorthwales.icnetwork.co.uk...east-used-phone-box--name_page.html
The story's a couple of years old, I wonder if the box survives?
The area has something of a tradition when it comes to phone box notoriety. In 1982 the next-nearest kiosk to my home, about half a mile further away at a little cluster of council houses called Bro Silyn, hit the headlines when it was found that it was being bugged. It seems that the police were attempting to uncover 'terrorist' plots being cooked up by Meibion Glyndŵr, but there was quite a furore over the dubious legality of the operation. The discovery of the bugging was made by an old chap called Moses who used to drive the taxi that took me and my brothers to school; he got a highly improbable fifteen minutes of fame out of the scandal.

A sad day for comedy Mar 1, 2006
Some very sad (and, to me at least, totally unexpected) news:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4759968.stm
I've often said that there are very few female comics who can make me laugh, indeed at the risk of sounding misogynistic there are very few who don't annoy me to the point of launching myself at the off switch. There was always one notable exception, though, and she should have been making us laugh for many years more.
Well, here we go again. Nov 27, 2005
I'm on the move again, so it looks like I'll be offline for at least a couple of weeks.
Frankly, I wouldn't even be considering this move if it wasn't for a particularly badly thought-out company reorganisation during the summer. I'm heading back to my old territory in South Devon, so at least I know I'll feel at home, and I'll be working with people I know, respect and like. I'll really miss Sidmouth, though - I hope that A6092480 will act as my tribute to somewhere that's become very special to me, although I had little idea when I wrote it that it would also be my farewell. I've spent much of the last couple of days revisiting favourite walks, looking on favourite views, even having a last cuppa in my favourite caff! Of course, I can always visit again in the future, but it's somehow not the same once you don't belong to a place any more.
Anyway, see you all soon, once my new pad is sorted out.
The road goes ever on and on...
