Hello, good evening and welcome

For reasons which may or may not become clear in the fullness of time, I am currently calling myself White Hart.

For those of you with a literal turn of mind, I was not cursed with this name by unkindly parents. I have a much more normal name for everyday use but I tend not to share it over the internet, for reasons of artistic ambiguity and also so that people who know me in my sober professional life can't find out what I'm really like (apart from by accessing the Explorer history file on my work PC - oops!!)

As yet I haven't thought of anything particularly interesting to write an article about, but I'm sure inspiration will strike on of these days. Until then, H2G2 is also a good place to hang out and chat to people, and one of my favourite places to do that is Ask the H2G2 Community.

I've also just discovered the H2G2 Bookworms' Club, which looks like my kind of place!

And I would also like to put in a word for my brother, The Prophet, who has a lot more free time to research and write than I do, and who shares my interests in such diverse fields as Buffy, Bagpuss and even Lester and the Unusual Pet, one of the best children's books ever!!

Soupy twist,

White Hart

One giant slide backward for mankind
Feb 1, 2003

I just heard on the news that the Space Shuttle Columbia has broken up on re-entry.

It takes me right back to 1986, when I was a starry-eyed, science-fiction-addicted twelve-year-old, and I truly believed that humans would be living on other planets (even if only the Moon and Mars) by now. The Space Shuttle seemed like such a wonderful thing, bringing that dream one step closer. And then Challenger exploded, and all that was set back years.

I've long since resigned myself to the fact that humans living anywhere but on Earth is a long, long way off, if it ever happens at all. And right now I think we as a species need to sort out our own planet and develop some sense of environmental responsibility first, otherwise we'll just go out there and ruin other worlds once we've destroyed ours. But still, this makes me remember those childhood dreams, and think how different the reality has become.

Refugee from another site...
Jan 15, 2003

I seem to have become a refugee from my normal posting board, which has become very quiet and, when there is any activity, it's inclined towards fairly pointless fluff...

So I've become more active here, although I have to say the size of the place is still a bit daunting...but I seem to be finding my way around without too many problems!

This Journal
Jan 9, 2003

I'm just not going to end up putting a lot in here: I already have an online journal, and unless things change hugely I'll continue to use that for my ramblings rather than inflict them on the people here.

Anyone who's interested can check out http://white_hart.livejournal.com/ to find out more about what I'm up to smiley
