Walter of Colne

I live in Hobart, Tasmania (that's Australia, gentlefolk), and sort of work some of the time and sort of study history at the University of Tasmania some of the time.

My main interests are history (the Roman Empire, later medieval Europe), and Earls Colne in any era. Labrador dogs are right up there, too, as are dry white wine, fierce red wine, cricket, Tasmania, and anyone who doesn't take her or himself , or life in general, too seriously.

I am only a relative newcomer to h2g2, but have really enjoyed chatting to so many people about so many different things. Thanks for speaking and listening to me; I hope there is lots more to come. One of my friends, who is interested in history as well as a whole lot of other things, wrote this poem for me.

I need someone who can walk with me
And talk with me, to explain some of the things
About how the people lived their lives
In the times of knights and kings.

Someone who can introduce me to Plato,
Aristotle, Socrates and Ptolemy,
To talk with the great men of learning,
About their many and varied discoveries.

To take me among the Roman ruins,
And show me where I need to go.
To teach me how to be a senator's wife,
And the things I long to know.

To walk among medieval towns
Where the knights on steeds parade,
Where damsels are in distress,
Because their men have gone on crusade.

To rub shoulders with the philosophers
And the poets and artists renowned;
The astronomers and scientists,
In the salons where the men of learning are found.

I need someone who will walk with me,
And understand about the things,
The way that people lived their lives
In the times of knights and kings.

We all do. Thanks Moondancer.

Earls Colne
Jul 25, 2000

Gooday everyone,

Okay, I'm still a beginner at this, but it is time for me to initiate a topic for discussion rather than just responding to others.

Earls Colne is a lovely village in North-East Essex. There is in fact a cluster of 'Colne' villages - Earls Colne, White Colne, Wakes Colne and Colne Engaine, all within a few miles of each other along the Colne Valley. Have any of you h2g2 travellers been to Earls Colne? If so, what impressions did the place leave you with? Is there anyone out there who lived/lives there? I was born and raised there, but haven't been back for many a long year. Why do I want to chat about it? Not certain, but it's a good a place as any to start.

Walter (of Colne).
