A few years back there was a Channel 4 documentary about Leo Marks. He went back to the site of the old bookshop and said "this now has the feel of a room where only newspapers are read." Upsetting. Who needs another f*****g theme bar anyway?

Leo Marks is surely worthy of his own entry...

This is very true. I haven't read "Between silk and Cynanide" though. But if I had, I try and write it! Anybody listening know the book?

I only learned of him beyond Helene's books after I got talking to a friend about Helene and he began talking about Leo. I had no idea he'd been a major figure in his own right, and then he started telling me about the cryptogrophy, the plays, 'Peeping Tom' and his autobiography.

Two years later, I was researching my book on the films of Martin Scorsese. In the credits for 'The Last Temptation of Christ' was one 'Leo Marks - Voice of Satan'. It turns out he and Scorsese became friends after the director had re-released 'Peeping Tom' and gained it a much-deserved re-evaluation by film critics. I decided to try to get an interview with Marx for my book only to find he'd died the month before.

I'm not sure I'd be the best person to write a biog of Leo marx for the Guide, but I'd love to help anyone else who might want to.
