just to be technical, but philosophy derives from (please forgive me if I spell this slightly wrong, I don't have my classic Greek dictionary on hand) Philos, meaning love (as you said above) and Sophia - which accually means wisdome (not knowledge).

The majority of philosopher's I know would be quite miffed to sophia translated as knowledge.
