I believe that all of this pumping and reclaiming occured with regard to the North Sea (Zuider Zee) and not the South Sea as mentioned in your article - although I'm not 100% certain of this!

Well, "Zuiderzee" literally means South Sea. Technically, the Zuiderzee was the part of the North Sea that was surrounded by the land itself. Take a look at a map of The Netherlands: Look at where the dyke ("afsluitdijk") is. Below it is what used to be the Zuiderzee (Now IJsselmeer). Above it you have the North Sea. So actually, before the dyke was constructed, the (former) Zuiderzee and North Sea were the same water, just named differently.
