One of them stated that "Kilroy was here" was marked on the houses, especially on the perimeter of towns that were just taken, to let other G.I.'s know that the house or structure had been reconned for snipers. Other WW2 vets I've spoken with have confirmed this several times. It seems to be more of a European campaign thing and have never heard it referenced in the Pacific campaign which makes me wonder about the ship story as I've never heard of it before.
