  | | Yes they are just stupid names for Industrial Mental. Ministry are just Industrial though, more than Industrial Metal.
Metal is a very big steam with lots of sub genres and cross breads. White Metal is the dumbest thing ever. Black Metal is anti-religious and evil, why any Christian group would want to do it I dont know.
Genre wise, what do we have: Heavy Thrash * Power Black Death Prog Gore Industrial Sludge Doom Melo Death Gothic
Cross breads/Sub Froms: Prog Death, Prog Power, Blackend Death, Blackend Power **, Prog Doom, Power/Thrash, Prog Thrash, Symphonic Black etc, etc
Other stuff that's not Metal but gets lumped with it sometimes: Grindcore (extreme form of Punk) Goregrind (Grindcore with Death Metal influences) Metalcore (Hardcore with Thrash/Death influences)
While I debate most of this on musical structer, it only matters if you care about it. As for the genre talk, it's like being a Physicist, there is a very big difference between Mass and Weight. But in everyday life, most people dont care.
* (No such thing as Speed, the name was used by Thrash bands that didn't want to be grouped with the violent and then Anti-Religious bands like Slayer [I should use a better example but Slayer are well known])
** What Children of Bodom really are. Power Metal with Black Metal distortion and vox.

  | | White metal is stupid, its just like Nazi Rap, it doesnt go together...
The only way people will listen open mindedly listen to anything different is if you get Busted to play it on Mind-Numbing-Mainstream radio, either that or get cannibal corpse and mortician to start writing songs about doing their school teacher... after killing her....
GORE! S'lates

  | | White Metal = Christian Rock only far FAR worse.
Cannibal Corpse...good songs....never going to happen...never. Thankfully there are people that do what they try to do well.
As for people listening open mindedly...eh, I'd rather keep the masses away from good music. Metalcore and Hardcore are about to get done over competely because of a few people jumping on the wagon and then kicking their sheep like friends on as well.
However, I can see a market for necro busted covers....like Ten Masked Men, only better.

  | | After coming back and re-reading this...something's caught my eye.
One: Metal isn't Rock. Has FAR more to do with Blues in the first place. Plus the fact it's own seperate musical evolution and not a subgenre.
Two: Genres have names for a reason, so people know what sort of music a band plays. If you think "Blackend Death" is some ubertechnical label, I'd hate to see what you think of genres for bands like ATSSD.
Anyway, "Blackend Death" gives ZERO nation about what the music is unless you actually know something about Metal. And if you know enough to know what Blackend Death Metal is, you're going to know if you like it or not.
Just because you dont want to deal with the technical side, please dont stop others from actually knowing something about the music they like beyond names of bands.

  | | Metal IS rock, man. Metal evolved from rock, when Zeppelin turned up their guitars even more than Cream did, when Sabbath took their blues, downtuned it and immersed in the occult...
But I'd say that there are as many blues-oriented rock bands as there are blues-influenced metal bands. The thing about metal and blues may have been true in the 1970s or whenever, but when's the last time you heard a modern metal tune bust out the blues? It's become the opposite of blues...instead of a swinging beat, you get rigid blastbeats, or simple lock beats, and instead of changing dynamics to enhance the mood of the song, it's usually full throw the whole time, 'cept if they tone it down for a bit, for contrast.

  | | Last time I heard a Metal band bust out Blues?
Every Sludge and Swamp band for the last 20 years. Look at Mastodon, their albums are full of Blues pickings, riffs and drum beats. Acid Bath did tons of it as well.
As for changing dynamics, every Prog and Power band seems to have that down. Even if Opeth aren't the best example of it, there's sure one big load of shifts in their music.
Blues Rock is a larger genre than more Blues basied Metal (Slugde and "swamp") but that just serves to hide the fact.
Ughhh, I hate having to name drop in examples.

  | | No such thing as Speed Metal? Consider this post, taken from the Royal Carnage forum:
"To generalize:
Speed Metal is typically more technical & melodic. It includes melodious vocal lines and riff structures (lots of reverse power chords and intricate string picking). The solos all follow melody lines too (see Marty Friedman). You'll also get sweeping appregios, or bluesy emotional playing -- in other words, there are lots of hooks in the songs. See: Accept (who defined the term), through to Megadeth and Annihilator.
Thrash is all out devastation & terror, slightly more simplistic riff structures (regular power chords being 'thrashed' out). The solos are blistering and mostly void of any scale structure (see Kerry King), and the vocal lines are 'barked' out. The obvious next evolutionary step from these bands is death metal. There's not as much crowd singing along I guess. See: Slayer, Dark Angel, Lethal, Sepultura.
Bands that might sit in the middle: Metallica & Testament. Indeed, Metallica always denied the thrash labelling.
Not strict of course, just an opinion."
Personally, I always thought the Speed Metal tag was silly, but that's not the point

  | | The technical and melodic parts would just make it technical or melodic thrash. Just like Anacrusis. Annihilator themselves where a technical thrash band then being a "Groove" (or NWOAHM) band.
Slayer are the reason why the "speed metal" rubbish started and are still used in this example. Thrash isn't all about devastation, as a lot of the more technical bands show.
As for Death Metal being the next step, a lot of thrash just needs death voxs to be Death.....Slayer in perticular.

  | | That's kind of the attitude I take - there's so much blurring of the lines you might as well just chuck 'em all in under the same, more appropriate tag and appreciate the fact there's room to differ in there. Though I'm not sure where Slayer starting the Speed Metal tag comes from.
You know what bugs me? People calling Judas Priest "speed metal" on the basis of one album and four other songs. Dumb.
