Adam Smith developed an important theorie. He didn't discovered the truth (what many people think), which is much more comlicated.

We should always be very carefull with the application of this theory, which has often been extended by also very bright people.

DD - also the Englightenment starts in the 17th C after the Civil War - it later spreads to the rest of Europe. smiley

Yeah Abi, in case you forget this is Scotland we are talking about, the outer edge of Europe, so the middle of the 18th was when it struck there. smiley

DD - that is **** if you don't mind me saying so. Scotland and England were politically seperate but very much a cultural sounding board. Particulalry if you look at mid 16th c radical thinking which is what sets off the Enlightenment.

BTW Abi, the article says that Glascow University was the centre of teh Scottish Enlightenment, it wasn't over when Smith joined the staff, but it had started.

After all the Scots gave us. Television, the steam engine to name but two.
