Hi

As an old time poster and site helper to the BBC WW2 Peoples War Archives I have recently posed a question on another WW2 site that perhaps can be answered here.

The link to my query is here:

www.ww2talk.com/foru...

Many thanks

Ron

ex 4th Hussar-
I think you would be right in not being "bovvered" - as the way that true History is not being taught - being "dumbed down" - revised for Hollywood's benefit - etc - some "historian" of the future will no doubt play some computer game and decide that the story is well meant but, as the British took no part in the final battle of the long forgotten Italian Campaign - they can find no record of the successful American units which participated in this victory, although there might be a case for the Long Island South Irish band and the Bronx Hussars.

That post demonstrates real integrity Ron.
Both posts are useful aids to any historians reading your starter.

You show yourself to be a reflective and honest Thucydides not a blustering Herodotus.

All our memories work that way.

No revision is necessary, imho. Your two records tell the whole story.

Hi Ron,

The reason we can't alter submissions on request is that since W2 People's War became an archive rather than an ongoing project there are no staff running it who can make the changes. To reopen the archive especially each time a request like this is made would be very expensive.

However the good news is that there is some maintainence scheduled for the near future. If you can mail the changes to your story to the main History inbox I'll pass them on so your update can be included in the maintenence task.

This is just my own twopennoth but I wondered if you'd considered annotating your story -explaining how your present-day research has changed your understanding of the situation as you recorded it at the time - rather than simply correcting it? This in itself could be valuable to readers wishing to understand the challenges of making accurate records in time of war.

All the best

Andrew

Hi Andrew

Firstly apologies for addressing my previous query to "any BBC Moderator", I am pleased to see that you are still at the helm smiley

I would be more than satisfied it the following item could be added to the story previously posted.

Addendum to the above:

As a former site helper I often took the BBC to task for publishing what I (and others) considered to be factually incorrect data.

I now find myself in the embarrassing situation of having committed the very crime of which I was so ready to accuse others.

To explain:

The story above was penned around 2004, some sixty odd years after the event under discussion and sought to describe one particular happening as the war drew to close in Italy.

My memory, upon which I relied entirely to describe the scene which had taken place, had led me to believe that the bridge was one of many, that Lugo was surrounded by water and that it was necessary to cross the bridge to gain access to the town.

However, now in the year in 2008, when I have the advantage of using modern maps of the area plus GOOGLE EARTH it soon becomes painfully obvious that Lugo is not surrounded by water and that the bridge to which I refer must have been purely a single bridge over the Santerno river and this was confirmed by Regimental Diaries to which I now have access.

I am grateful to the BBC for allowing me to make this amendment and have to admit that this experience has made me feel a little more tolerant of similar mistakes I have spotted in the past smiley

No problem. I'll be pleased to pass this on to be added to your story.

Just realised I hadn't acknowledged your over-nice comments.
It's always nice to know that I am more like Thucydides than Herodotus. smiley

Andrew,

I do not know if this board is still being monitored, so I post blind. I would like to alter a contribution I made to the people's war site. The change is due to a mistake in an official document and I would be grateful if my piece could be altered to reflect. Could you let me know if this is possible please?

Regards
Hugh

Hi Ron,
Sorry not to have spotted this earlier--I have chased this up and am waiting on a answer. Given the hour and the day it may be the start of next week before I can relay any news but I'll post something up as soon as I have it.

Hope this finds you well.

All the best

Andrew

I take it you had no joy with my request. I will leave it now which is a pity. Thank you.

Hi Hugh,

There is some maintenence work scheduled for next month - I don't know if it's possible to add your correction to that job but I'll see if there's a chance of making it work.

best wishes

Andrew

This posting has been hidden during moderation because it broke the House Rules in some way.

Hi Hugh,

I've made enquiries, it won't be possible to make further alterations to the content of WW2 People's War. The only exception would be if there are legal issues - in which the story in question would be removed.

I'm sorry we can't be more help.

Kind regards

Andrew

OK, Andrew, thank you for trying to help. There are no legal issues just a mistake that I would like corrected. If a correction is not possible then I would be happy for it to be deleted in total. If this is not possible then that is fine.
Regards
Hugh
