My favorites were his books about sailing, since I've done some myself. He did it differently, tho tongueincheek :

"I keep thinking about Christopher. I slide open the door, step into the saloon, lit at this time of night only by the picture lights that diffuse the oil colors of those splendid sea scenes by Richard Grosvenor ... when the boat rocks I need to exert great pressure through my knees on the underside of the [piano] keyboard to keep from falling over backward, and the additional challenge to coordination is enough to make the sounds that result a travesty on the Bach partita I am, as usual, struggling with. I left the piano and put on the cassette player, a late Beethoven sonata, as we sat down for a dinner of turkey and stuffing, wine, cheese, fruit and coffee. I thought I would try -- just a flyer -- to say something about the difference between the late and the early Beethoven...."

http://www.nytimes.com/books/00/07/16/specials/buckley-airborne.html

He and I also share a "funniest book" opinion, "Sailing: A Sailor's Dictionary" (paraphrasing):

The Beaufort Scale of Wind Strength:

Force 3 - Not Enough Wind
Force 4 - Too Much Wind
Force 5 - WAY Too Much Wind
Force 6 - WooWeeeee ....

And from his son, also a very funny author:

"And what finer tribute can any father receive than Christopher's final entry in the log: 'Pop, if you were to set sail tomorrow to cross another ocean, I'd sell my soul to ship out with you. Any day.'"

I'm happy for him (in a perverse way) that he got to go to war because clearly it was something he wanted to do. I'm am absolutely astounded that the British media kept it quiet for so long! Not in a negative way necessarily, but astounded nonetheless!

It might be a bit cruel of me, but I can't help laughing at this witless hippy freeloader: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/03/01/2177209.htm

'A British peace activist aiming to walk to India to prove a money-free world is possible has turned back at the first hurdle, after getting to France and finding he needed to speak French.'

So I'm cold-hearted and callous. So sue me.

If *that* stopped him, I would advise he doesn't try again at all. What did he expect, a healthy walk around?

"21-year-old fathers seventh child"

"As he is unemployed he does not support his children financially, but Mr Macdonald says he has no plans to father any more children."

Is it just me being cynical, or does anyone else get the feeling he probably wasn't doing much planning where the first seven were concerned?

This bit made me laugh:
He said: "My mum's not happy about all these kids.
She tells me to pack it in and keep it in my trousers."
