Subject: "Handapparate"

Okay, this is more a question...

In Germany there is something called the "Handapparat" wherein you can find all the books your teacher decided are basics for whichever course you're taking. The books in the "Handapparat" cannot be taken home, so that everybody can always get them to work at the library.

Does something like that exist in other countries, too?

I suppose the equivalent in the UK would be the 'short loan collection' - which houses core texts for the courses. The items in this collection can be taken out but only for a short period - for a few hours or overnight. Sometimes these things are not allowed to be removed from the library, but are nevertheless 'borrowed' by the student/whoever, so that the library knows where the book is!

Hmm, that sounds pretty much like the same thing. You can borrow books from a "Handapparat" over night or over the weekend, too.
