...considering my company is yet again weilding the axe and I am yet again in the firing line (to mix metaphors), do any savings you have get taken into account when claiming benefits? There are grisly rumours that you aren't entitled to anything until you've spent anything you've been able to save over the years, but I am not sure how true this is.

Varies from one benefit to another. Some arent means tested (eg child benefit), others are.

Go to your local CAB or ring the Benefit Helpline.
