I recently had cause to investigate some claims made by homeopaths, and I came across a rather interesting paper in the journal *Thorax*. In this study, a group of children were being administered steroids as a standard treatment for asthma. Some of these were selected for homeopathic treatment, the idea being that if there is anything to homeopathy, then those getting the homeopathic treatment would improve faster than those who did not.

For this trial, three respected homeopaths were brought in. They were given free reign to prescribe whatever they felt the patients needed.

In the end, homeopathy had no effect.

If you're interested, the paper can be viewed online at http://thorax.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/58/4/317 . You have to register, but it's free.
