erm National Lampoon predates SNL by ages! It has it's roots in the Harvard Lampoon first published in 1876! If you mean the actors that played in the Lampoon film series, those too had more of a start in Chicago comedy clubs than SNL.

yes, Lampoon was prob'ly the first on a national level, but then along happened radio and then teevee.....

well, that's why we add to the Guide Entries, for those clarifications and/ or expansions on points made. i believe charlie chaplin was the icon for the movie industry, with w.c. fields and even mae west, but it's great yakking about folks being funny, whatever that is.
