Subject: An alternative to carrying money ...

At most places in Europe, you will be able to get money out of a hole in the wall with a Maestro / Cirrus (debit) card, so you don't need to carry round wads of cash. I am in my gap year in Moscow, and I use my card all the time. I can also sometimes use it as a switch card in supermarkets.

However sometimes an ATM machine, or a checkout desk in a shop will turn round and tell you your number is ivalid. Don't be too worried, just keep trying the ATM machines until one will decided to let you have some of your money ...

I've always wondered ... how easy is it to get a card replaced overseas if it gets lost/stolen/expires/demagnetised/eaten by dingoes?
