I think the main surprise for the child I was would be how hard I actually work: at school, I never had to; even at university most of the work came pretty easy, so I was about as lazy as I could get away with. Once I started "real" work, my hours would have made a junior doctor blanch... then I cut down to about a 70-hour week before finally leaving and going self-employed. Now (ten years on) I'm still self-employed, but with a wife and children to support, so I'm back to working my butt off to support them. But I still have the enjoyment of life, the sense of humour and the ready wit that the old me would recognize and feel quite at home with.
