| | | | Talking Point: Schools and Violence | |
Violence in schools is becoming a major problem. Higher security has helped to keep out those people who do not belong there, but violence is also committed by the people inside schools. Children are being excluded for violence, not only towards other children, but towards teachers as well. How safe are our children once they enter the playground?
More than one teacher has been attacked by a pupil, and some pupils are in fear of their safety because of the risk of bullying. It has been known for children to attempt suicide to avoid going to school where they are being picked on. But what can be done to make our schools safer? Have you come across violence in your school or college? Have you ever been a victim of a bully, and how did you cope with it? How can we help violent pupils to become responsible members of society? Have you ever bullied anyone else? Are you a teacher, and have you ever felt unsafe or actually been threatened or attacked? How can we cope with violence as it happens, and the aftermath?
