As part of the forthcoming Criminal Justice Bill, the British Government is planning to restrict the right to trial by jury. In July of this year, the House of Lords voted by a majority of 74, against allowing defendants to choose to be tried by a judge sitting alone. This week we want to know is an end to this ancient right is a good thing, which will speed up the legal process or an erosion of civil liberties? Should everyone have a right to trial by jury? If not, what alternatives should be available? Are juries more in touch with the public then the judiciary? Are some cases just too complex for people to follow? How can the justice system be improved?
