I was teaching on a residential course in northern Poland. We used to tape the BBC news to use it as a post-breakfast listening and discussion practice. When the Berlin Wall came down, I had to get up very early and tape the news while everyone else ate breakfast, frantically writing questions while gulping awful coffee. So much happened between one day and the next.
My younger son was staying with his German penfriend in West Berlin. I had had to sign a permission for him to go to the East if possible. By the time he got there the wall was down, but his penfriend had saved him a very small piece, which is still upstairs in my study. star star

The dog cart is at the door, sir

In 1960 I acted the part of Merriman in the school play ("The Importance of being Earnest"). He has very few lines, mostly about the dog cart coming to take Algy away in disgrace. It has taken 49 years to discover what the mode of transport was - thanks to the Museum of Transport which finished our lovely weekend in Hull.
It was great to meet some old friends and two I've not met before.Others were missed, but thanks to a composite picture provided by Moonhogg, their faces were with us.
Special thanks to Galaxy Babe for the multiple views of the Humber Bridge. star star

Twenty years ago

I joined a colleague on a trip from Shanghai to an island called Putoshan. We taught Scottish dancing to her graduating teacher trainees and were joined by some Chinese sailors. On the trip back, we were the only Europeans on the ship and people kept sidling up to us to ask if we'd heard any news from Beijing....star star

60's hangover
Nov 20, 1999

If you can remember the sixties you weren't there? I can remember long stretches and I was a student for about half of them. Definitely remember taking bets on whether we'd be around untilY2K (didn't call it that then) Unfortunately the stakeholder died, as hoped, "before I'm 30"
