The Great Demon's Lair MUA HA HA HA HA HA!

WARNING! PAGE IN DESPERATE NEED OF UPDATING...erm

Sorry, nothing interesting to read here!
& Orcus, archnemesis of Demogorgon, I live deep in the pits of Hell, coming out only at night to raid innocent shopping centres with my deadly horde. If you should come across my black presence (actually its probably more like magenta but don't tell anyone, shhh!) beware as I wield a Wand of Death!

Ooh I'm soooo scary (in my best Dale Winton voice)!

In real life I'm an organic chemist working at Cardiff University in Wales. I am working (slowly to be sure) at adding some more scientific articles to the guide.

yikes Surely this creature cannot be me???!!! Well...maybe winkeye

I am a big fan of Liverpool football club. I also closely follow the fortunes of Celtic (my family are mostly glaswegian) and Rushden and Diamonds. For some football distractions why not play Master B's Phantasy football tournament or Greydesk's fantasy footie game? The difference lies in the spelling don't you know. winkeye

A pink and gold dragon on an inkpot
I like reading Science Fiction/ Fantasy novels. Surely an unusual taste amongst h2g2ers winkeye . Read Tolkien (go and look at the website for the upcoming film of Lord of The Rings it looks good biggrin ), Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, Stephen Donaldson and George R.R. Martin, they're great. Avoid David Eddings, he's rubbish. Oh, and did I mention Douglas Adams, well, he's not bad really.

A wizard
If the sight of h or L makes you jump out of your chair and you constantly wonder how you're going to take off those cursed Boots of Levitation, then like me you must love the roguelike computer game nethack which is a free, single player, role playing game in the mould of Dungeons and Dragons. Its really really good, but don't play it if you're into good graphics 'cos it aint got none. IMHO gameplay before graphics anyday. You can find out about it on the official Nethack website. I would be most interested to hear from anyone else who plays it and maybe start off a stupid death page for it here on h2g2.

Whose Line Is it Anyway

Anyone who used to join in the various games is welcome to carry on in my newly created temporary home. Hopefully, this bit will eventually (and I do mean eventually) become just a link to the true Whose Line is It Anyway page.
Newcomers are of course, welcome too. Due to h2g2 being h2g2, it's kind of fragmented into various other fora too so click on these links to play the song titles game and Argon0's Book/Story Titles and Movies/plays/TV shows linking games.

Some Fun Distractions

Why not try H2G2's Paperless Paperchase? Its good fun. Also I enjoy taking part in the H2IQ quiz. Sad mad or bad?'s Word Gymnastics is fun, as is the Limerick game. Come and join the fun at castle Camelot.

Oh dear, wonder what happened. His 'other television commitments' don't seem to have manifested themselves to me although I might not have been watching. winkeye

So will Mock the Week be the same again? sadface

I must say this programme has been a must much for me over the last few years - much funnier and fresher than the now hackneyed Have I got News For You.

And he surely is the main man. The interplay between him and Hugh Dennis (in surely the funniest thing he's done since Mary Whitehouse) dominates the show frankly.

I wonder if this will sink them both - although everything has to come to an end I suppose.

Legend of the Seeker

At home we've been enjoying this miniseries on the Sci-Fi channel. It's based on the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind which I have read up to about book 8ish.

It has been a bit of a revelation for two reasons.

1. There's been (gasp) something _good_ on the sci-fi channel for once.

2. It's enthused me for the Sword-of-Truth world again.

I got pretty fed up with the books, I think there are three more I haven't read and whilst they remained pretty cool in many ways towards the end of my reading they were also getting really irritating in many more ways. First, the 'will they won't they' thing with the two main characters began to get *really* tiresome. Second the level of sanctimony and preaching of the author's obvious political views got extremely tiresome. Thirdly, when you begin to hate the 'purity' of the main character it's not so good and finallyI think they were just running out of steam frankly. I haven't had much inkling to read the rest of the series (from Chainfire onwards) although I guess seeing the Dreamwalker get his comeuppance would maybe be nice but I've yet to see any kind of review that changes my mind.

The TV miniseries is good on a couple of fronts. First it does not remotely follow the book. The main thrust of the series is the same as Wizard's First Rule but the plot is totally different meaning you actually get something new. There are Mord-Sith straight out, many more wizards and confessors than in the books and even relatives of Richard that don't appear for about 7 books in the series.
Secondly it's actually done pretty well, none of the naffness that really puts me off the more run of the mill fantasy series on TV.

Finally, the Mord-Sith costumes (and Kahlan) are drool and Darken-Rahl is played by Haldir from Lord of the Rings. biggrin

Finally some TV fantasy worth watching. Now when will the do the Wheel of Time...?

Not mentioned it much on here except to one or two individuals but my better half lost her job back in May under very infuriating circumstances.
One would have thought you need to actually maliciously do something wrong to be dismissed for gross misconduct. Well we have been reeducated on that front. It seems it's legal for a company to decide that anything they like is gross misconduct and there's nothing much you can do about it. Such behaviour means they can summarily get rid of you and not pay any holiday entitlement, days in lieu or indeed notice pay to you. It also screws up the chances of claiming jobseekers allowance and any payment protection insurance policies you might have. grr Makes getting another job interesting too since what do you tell new employers about how you come to be a new jobseeker?

For what its worth, all she did was make a mistake which anyone* could make in the type of repetitive job she did (counting money out for putting into ATM machines). She mispacked and got dismissed and her union just caved in to the company and did almost nothing for her. All this reminds me of why I vote labour, not that they seem to help on this sort of front these days.

* and almost all of her former coworkers have at some point.

Anway, I digress.

Thankfully she has finally found a new job!!!!!!!!!!!!
<phew>
We were doing rather well out of the recession until this happened. Back on a reasonable financial footing again.
3 months paying on my own to support a property that really need two wages was not much fun.
