...and off I am Jul 31, 2009
...but only for a week, going on holiday with my daughter. We have packed, certainly forgot something, and are really looking forward to it (my kids had holidays one or the other year, for me it is the time on holiday in this century)
Stay well my friends, I am back soon and hope to find you in good health and good mood then.

The new influenza.... Jun 26, 2009
...or how a disease can make you ill even if you are not infected.
Some of you might know I work for the health department in our municipality. I love my job - I really do. But what is happening since the outbreak of this influenza A/H1N1 is unbelievable, especially since a class in our japanese school had been infected (at least a lot of the pupils) during a journey. It is crazy - and I always wonder what they will do when it will get into a really serious state.
From the start we sent doctors into incoming planes from the USA, Canada and Mexico, asking the passengers if they had any symptoms, handing out papers they had to fill in, and if necessary took the temperature. If there is a suspect, the person is brought to our university clinic where a test is being made. If, after a couple of hours, it turns out to be negative (no infection) the person is being sent home (or wherever he/she had intenden to go). If the test is positive (infected), the machinery starts: The papers of all the passengers of the flight will be copied (so two pages make one front/back side, will be scanned so they are made in into pdf-files, then these files have to be renamed: it has to be opened, checked which city the person lives in, name is the city and postcode. Then emails to the health departments of these cities have to be sent, telling them about this case and asking them to contact the person and test it.
With the japanese school the kids were tested (the suspect cases), the whole shool had been closed, the families of the infected kids had been put into quarantine. Then after a couple of days the families had been tested (and of course more infected people had been found). New tests...
And now the paperwork, nothing had been really organised right from the beginning, so now it is a shere mess. After seeing, that our people alone couldn't handle it anymore (several hundreds of overtime hours had been done, and one of the departments is still overworked) the finally engaged some more people just for this case.
It is not sure yet who will pay for it all. Not sure yet if it still will go on (it was said we will stop the work in the planes by the end of the month, now it was said it will go on, then that perhaps planes coming from the UK have to be checked as well, which will not be possible...).
So people at work start being ill without beeing infected, just because they are too exhausted - or going crazy because our big boss is even worse than usual.
(how is the influenza A/H1N1 dealt with in your city/country?)

Back online Apr 27, 2009
I have not been online very often recently, because my computer didn't work anymore and I didn't really get used to my son's laptop (plus that I shared that with son and daughter).
Now my son has repaired the computer, so I will spent a little more time here. Though due to work, where I am sitting at the computer most of the time as well, it won't be hours on end, which I ask you to excuse....

New Job and big plans for other things.... Oct 3, 2008
Well, I hope my job-searching and "fear of loosing it"-time has ended.
Just after I had started the job with staff leasing company I got the invitation from our city administration for a job interview. I went - and I got the job. Only parttime, but much more secure of course than the other one.
So on September the 1st, 2008 I started there. Since then I am writing medical reports - a completely new subject for me. I am enjoying it really, because I have really nice people around me, and they already asked me if later I could work fulltime.
So jobwise I am really happy at the moment

Other plans: I am quite involved in the parents association at my daughters school. And last year I thought I should try to find out, if there is such a thing for all the schools of the same type in our city. I didn't find such an organisation, so I started to gather information - and I am going to found this organisation. The first information event had already taken place, and the few representatives of the other schools who were there are really interested, so in about 2 weeks time we have another gathering for information and founding. I hope it will work out - and then of course I hope we can really do something for "our" type of school and for our kids. It is not easy though to get parents to be engaged in such things, but I am optimistic.
