ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 21st October 1999
Santragenius V Home Planet

Welcome, Dear Unknown Visitor! If you don't see me around, please help yourself to a stiffdrink . If you grow tired of drinking those while waiting, you can always drop a message smiley .

Links for me for convenience:

Who am I?

I'm a Dane -- that is, from Denmark. There is an excellent National Geographic article about "Civilized Denmark" to be found out there (hint: you might search the web for "Civilized Denmark"). To read it and see the wonderful pictures accompanying it, you'll have to buy or borrow the July 1998 issue of the magazine. Highly recommended!

In fact, here's an absolutely wonderful quote from that same article:

Sober-faced Danes queue at the bus stop in the rain, which they do not flinch at, and it dawns on you that a daylong rain is not unusual, this is a North Atlantic winter. The sun won't shine tomorrow, maybe not the next day. You have arrived in a land where Christmas means more than in, say, Barbados; it is the last outpost on the long grim trek toward spring. Dark gray sky at noon, dull brown brick all around, dead trees, broken glass in the gutter, and you, sorry you, your head like a sponge full of mud. At first you think it's jet lag, and then you realize that everyone else feels this way too. Welcome to the birthplace of existentialism.

I'm 28 and some months1, living in a forestry and green (well, green during the summer that is) north-western part of greater Copenhagen.

Music

I like stuff like:

The links in the list are not the strongest collection, I guess -- but good for starting points. Some are in Danish -- after all, some of the artists are Danish...

If there are some of these you haven’t got a clue about, don’t worry. Chances are that you’re just not Danish enough. Or you might be significantly younger than me. Or -- you might in fact have a different taste in music... winkeye

My H2G2 CV:

A proud Salonista!

Link to Lil's Atelier.

The Salonistas? An irresistible force that stops frequently for tea breaks winkeye . Or maybe, more precisely described as on the main page for Lil's Atelier: "A core group of really interesting humans, animals, insects, uncategorisables, ETs and desperados with substantive things to say on an incredibly wide range of Subjects".

It is really true, as you are kindly reminded on every page of every thread, that "Social Life Begins and Ends With Etiquette". One warning: We do tend to talk a lot - so if you fear backlog, please be advised to get over that fear... winkeye

Now with proper day naming!

I'm a Thursdayite!
space space space space space space space space space Thursday -
Always has been called Thursday,
space always will be called Thursday

A fine morning?

Cheer up? Why???

It might well be a fine morning. In fact, most of them are smiley . However, in case it isn't, it just isn't. OK? Capisce? At P.U.D.D.I.N.G. we deserve every right to be grumpy about it!

Muse It!

Hope I haven't forgotten any - feel free to throw wet beer mats at me if I have... (or, even better, let me know and I'll haste to make it OK again)

ex-ACE

The badge below is a reminder from the time I "did time" as an ACE, or Assistent Community Editor. The reason for my escape ;) was quite simply that I did not feel I had the time to do the job in a manner I found appropriate. Too many people to greet, too little time...
The ACES are complete volunteers and spend their free time helping and making people feel welcome, so please be nice to them if you see them. You can find them using the tools below - I'm sure they'd appreciate a hello and well done!

Late night thoughts
Jul 10, 2009

Trees dark against the late evening sky
The sky itself being a wonder of evening light
The air is still, no wind cares to disturb it
Leaving the trees to be still in their vigil

Over to the south, the moon watches over them
Low on the horizon, yellow and almost round
It kisses the tip of the branches of a lucky tree

I am at home in the summer evening’s air and light
As always joyful that it invites me in
Knowing that while I’m there and happy that I am
I will feel a sting of longing for that other place

I don’t know where it is or when
Whether that place is one of space or time
Or a special place at a particular time
And yet it almost always hovers at the edge of my conscience
Beckoning or maybe just quietly whispering about its delights

I know that I may never know more about it
Than what was hinted on a few summer nights long ago
It was like a waft of perfume in the air
And I could have tried to follow the fragrant trail
Let myself be led towards it and, maybe, have stayed there ever since

But the shimmering vista remained distant
And other summer scents and sounds were nearer
And held me and kept me with them

Now I am where I am
And as I lie down in the darkness, listening to summer sounds
And smelling the perfumes of this tranquil summer night
I know that I may never find that place

And that if I shouldn't
Then this place msut be that place
And so I am truly at the best of all places

With that thought on my mind
I smile as gently as the summer night air stirs
And I fall asleep

Feeling at home
Apr 3, 2009

Today, I went two hundred kilometers and back.
To and from a place which is 10.365 kilometers or 6441 miles away from home.

This evening, I realised what it was I felt.
I felt at home.

At home?

??

I've always thought of home as a place. Somewhere you can mark with an 'X' on the map. Somewhere special. Real. With a dimension of geographical presence.

I've also heard the version that 'Home is where I lay my head'. Or my hat, for that matter.

Home is both more and less than those things. Less than a specific place in space. More than a feeling.

Home is a state of mind.
And that particular state of mind can be reached in probably a handful of ways.

My very near ones, my loved ones, can induce it in a wink of an eye. Yes, here I belong, with you, us. That is home.

Books can do it. I'm so much always home in a book that it is such a disappointment when I dive into one and find out that, no, in this one, I'm not. But generally, I enter the book's universe and I'm at home. Magic of books, that is.

Nature does it to me. A steep slope of a mountain, the lush greenness of a spring forest, the moon or a clear star shining to me from a dark night's sky, a sudden buffeting of strong winds on a steep sidewalk in Brazil. I'm at home in nature.

Friends, friends really can do it, too. And music can do it. Like both did today. On a long road where I had no business feeling at home.

Yet I did. Very much so.

And oh, how I feel lucky for it.
