ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 3rd February 2004
Alex 'Tufty' Ashman
Doctors surround a patient's hospital bed.

Welcome to my personal space. As you've probably guessed my name is Alex - I'm a 4th year medical student1, Norfolk born and bred (in a way), and I have a girlfriend who is convinced that I spend my summers working on a farm, eating hotpot and drinking 'coider'. Well, that's actually almost true blush . Oh and I'm an atheist, but I'm mostly harmless.

Where Am I?

Most likely a hospital somewhere. I've been to the Royal Free in Hampstead, the Whittington in Archway, University College Hospital, the Heart Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Great Ormond Street, all of which are in London. I've also been on fleeting visits to Edgware Community Hospital and Hertford County Hospital, and I've stayed (in the student's accommodation) at Chase Farm Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital and Basildon University Hospital.

What Am I Doing?

Learning something new. Every. Single. Day.

Things I've Done on h2g2

Field Researching
I have a University Field Researcher badge for projects on the London Underground, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and Mental Health.
Post Reporting
I've written quite a few bits of nonsense for The h2g2 Post, though I try not to as the rest of their stuff is of much higher quality.
Scavenging
I've gained a Scavengers badge for rescuing five articles from h2g2's Flea Market and turning them into Edited Entries.
Since 4 November, 2005Scouting
I used to be a Scout. Scouting involves helping authors in Peer Review and recommending entries for the Edited Guide.
Since 5 July, 2006Sub-editing
I used to be a SubEditor, meaning that I worked on some of the entries picked by Scouts from Peer Review and made any adjustments necessary for the Entries to enter the Edited Guide.
Solo Edited Entry Writing
I've got a badge for writing a lot of solo Edited Entries. Badges currently exist for 1, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150 and 200 entries, and there's now a page listing authors with the most solo entries.
UnderGuide Writing
To my astonishment, I've had a piece of fiction accepted by h2g2's UnderGuide.
The Stretcher blob, as designed by Malabarista
The Stretcher
I took part in h2g2's The Stretcher competition (see Tufty's Stretcher Entries) and came joint fourth out of fourteen contestants.
Entry of the Month
My Edited Entry on Shell Shock won Entry of the Month for February 2009.

    A+E

My first four week placement of my final year of medical school is in A+E, and I've just had my first shift: 18.00-24.00 hours (talk about jumping in at the deep end). I ended up taking histories from three patients, examining two of them, got an in-course assessment form signed off, and even had the pleasure of dipsticking some urine.

It's odd, but yesterday I was feeling rather dejected having had nothing but introductions on my first day here, whereas right now at quarter to one in the morning I'm feeling wide awake, happy and, above all, actually capable of doing things.

Can't support your claims? Why not sue?
    Jun 25, 2009

A short while ago, science author Simon Singh was sued for stating that chiropractors have no evidence that their treatment are effective for asthma, ear infections and other childhood conditions. This is the first case of its kind, and more will surely follow if it is successfully prosecuted.

This may not seem a big deal, but scientific scrutiny of treatments and critical discussion of medical practice are vital to ensure the safety of patients and prevent companies from making false claims as to the effectiveness of their products. Open debate and the careful review of evidence would be stifled by the sheer cost of defending a libel claim and the way that libel law is weighted against writers.

A campaign is now underway to keep the libel laws out of scientific disputes - please support it at http://www.senseaboutscience.org.uk/index.php/site/project/334/

    cheers

    The EG Writing Workshop
    May 19, 2009

    1) It's recently been mentioned that most entries submitted to Peer Review are by established Researchers, with only a small minority coming from new users.

    2) From a quick count it seems that new users are just as likely to submit their first entries to the EG Writing Workshop as they are to submit them to Peer Review.

    3) The EG Writing Workshop has been very quiet for some time, with many new submissions receiving zero response.

    4) There are only a few new submissions to the EG Writing Workshop each month.

Combine all the above and you get the obvious conclusion that all you Peer Review types should be subscribed to the EG Writing Workshop, if you're not already - it shouldn't add that much to your workload. Otherwise, newbies that could contribute to the site are liable to have their work ignored.
