ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 12th July 1999
The man in the shack's shackpage

Greetings, fellow hiker's.

I'm Eric, a thirty-something market researcher from south London. I beleive I am a direct male-line descendant of the original Golgafrincham market researchers of whom there must have been countless thousands.

I live at Crystal palace, home of Pissarro, the great exhibition, the BBC transmission tower, dinosaurs, and the more recent eco-war over the ruination of a very nice park. (Oh, and a so-called football team.)

I'm pretty much a newbee to the internet and the IT world in general as the last computer I owned was a Sinclar ZX81 with a colossal 1K RAM.

I like autumn, purple, 9, hills, cavorting, bikes, tea and big sounds.

I also like this place and all that inspired it.

The character of The man in the shack really caught my imagination. He's such an enigma of a character. Just him and his cat out there on that rainy planet, believing nothing, questioning everything.

Douglas Adams says this about him:

"I suppose he came from a discussion I had with someone about this not entirely original observation that everyone's experience of the world, on which we build this enormous edifice of what we consider the world is, of what we think the universe is, and our place in it, and how matter behaves, and everything, is actually a construct which we put on little electrical signals that we get. When you think of what we know of the universe, and the data we have to go on, it's a pretty huge gap. Even the information we have is not only just what we happen to have been told but the interprtation that we have put on the little electrical signals that tell us that somebody's told us this."

This takes me back to schooldays, when I was unwilling to believe a word my teachers told me. Nowadays, I'm more open minded but I still believe it's important to not make too many assumptions , especially about others, and that you shouldn't take things for granted, again especially others.

I think that questioning things, big things, small things, squeaky things, is part of what makes us human, it's part of what makes us evolve and take leaps forward. And we'll never run out of subject matter. I enjoy it and that's why I am the man in the shack.

Finding my way
Jul 13, 1999

It's July 14 and I've been registered for just under a week. It's been alot of fun but also pretty confusing, especially at first when I didn't know what the hell was going on. I think an expanded don't panic service would be a useful feature, as would a structured index to compliment the search function. A weekly on-site newspaper might not be a bad idea as well.

That said, most of the fun has been had just drifting around, getting lost, reading entries and user pages, saying silly things in the forums, and generally figuring out how this place works and what it is capable of.

I was very exited when I first found out about H2G2 and I hope to feel the same way for a long time to come.

Insomnia will never be the same again.
