The UnderGuide

UG

Some time back I stumbled into the The UnderGuide and I've been there ever since. The UnderGuide takes the very best alternative writing to be found on h2g2 and puts it on the Front Page. This looks easy only because a dedicated team of Miners and Gem-Polishers makes it look easy. Miners2 also tend to the Alternative Writing Workshop, reviewing, enthusing and (occasionally) Minesweeping, but it's open to all: go and take a look at the AWW and sample some of the best writing around. For the best of the best, check out the UnderGuide Archives. If you're already familiar with all that, like what you see of the alternative side of hootoo and you fancy helping out, enquire below, or over at this page. If you've spotted, or even written, something a bit special, the UnderGuide, the CAC, or The Post all want to hear about it.

Sub-Editing

All indications to the contrary (look right) I am not a Sub-editor any more. Nevertheless, I'm still going to leave the links here. So ... let's have you Sub-editors' Home Page3 and you Writing Guidelines and you Style and, finally, you Guide ML. As for other bits and bobs, Guide ML Clinic is where you can learn to write GuideML and Special Symbols in GuideML is where you can learn how to type café, or Zürich. The What's Coming Up Page... er... well, you can probably work that out yourself.

Scouting

I'm not a Scout any more either. Which means I can't see the Scout Recommendations (but I'm going to leave the link for passing Scouts to use - I always thought it far from easy to find). Peer Review is where new guide entries go for comment, while Peer Review - Conversations is where comment goes for new guide entries. Update Forum is where old guide entries go for a bit of a brush-up, Flea Market is where abandoned guide entries seek a new home and Challenge h2g2 is where interesting gaps are pointed out and the brave then rush to fill them. The EG Writing Workshop: if it's not quite ready for Peer Review and you're looking for a bit of help. The Collaborative Writing Workshop closed some time ago... but it is still 'there'. Editorial Feedback: if you spot a booboo.

The h2g2 Census, 2006

Ah, yes. I started making a census in Spring 2006. The blurb read: "Come and help out: check to make sure that you're on it, check to make sure that your friends are on it. Do it now, before it's too 2007!" Now that it is 2007, I'm a bit stuck: it's basically an enormous list which is going to get less and less accurate as time goes by (and it wasn't terribly accurate to begin with). If you've got a good idea for something to do with it, feel free.

My 42ism is 2+4(=6)x4(=24)/4(=6)+8(=14)x3 = 42

In the last Phantasy Phootball season, I managed Toilet Rabbit Albion. It didn't go well. The season before that, I steered Forbes Philipson's Masters to mid-table respectability. Well, actually, Number Six did that and then I stopped them from crashing to the bottom. I still haven't got round to asking him what the name means. If you want to find out about toilet rabbits, ask the other Phootie. Sorry, Footie. This season, I'm having another go with The Slinky Fins. If you want to know about the name, you'd better ask Footie about that too.

During the 2005 h2g2 Presidential Election, I was Reddyfreddy's running-mate and campaign manager. We fought a good, clean campaign from our HQ and stuck rigidly to the facts in our Party Election Broadcast. We came in sixth. I still can't believe it.

I work as the piano player in the bar of The Hitchhiker Hotel. Please drop in as I am happy to perform requests. Two years on and I still haven't got a room at the hotel, so I remain in my tent: please feel free to drop by. The polar bear formerly known as Hilary Speartooth Tuskbotherer III and now just known as Hilary, has his or her own tent next door, but don't be alarmed, as he or she is merely acting as a walrus deterrent

I am also Rabbit King of the Grunty Pigs. Jangley said so.

Gerald, with some of his 'friends'. You'll note that Gerald - in the middle, on the left - is keeping his feet covered. This is probably because he has inadvertently gone out in what he - or his 'friends' - consider unfashionable trainers.

1 Minus the much-lamented and now long-gone 'Most Postings' and 'Longest Postings' lists... all right, so they made everything crash now and again, so what?
2 I do have all the standard mining gear, but I passed on the canary and just bought Gerald a yellow tracksuit instead. He likes it - says it goes with his flip-flops.
3 I'd hazard a guess that the one on the page itself is the most carefully placed apostrophe on the whole of h2g2. Oh - and if you think there should be a hyphen in that last sentence, I don't care. I'm not a fan of hyphens. I prefer dressinggown to dressing-gown.

JOURNAL
Radical PS Redesign
Jul 2, 2007

Beginning with a drastic 50 percent reduction in badges biggrin

I wondered whether announcing this in a journal was really necessary, but I didn't want anyone complaining I'd redecorated without warning.

Now - who wants to help me move the sideboard?

Ready to Throw the Modem Out of the Window
May 14, 2007

My broadband's decided to stop working again. It's been down for a couple of hours now.

I finally cracked and came on here via pay-as-you-go dial-up. Though I resent having to pay for the internet twice, it's still vastly cheaper than the 'helpline' (Ha ha ha ha *cough* ha HA!)

Deeply p***ed off. This first happened three weeks ago or so and I've already been through a hugely expensive bout of sitting on their technical support helpline to be told, after forty minutes, that they don't really know what it is but, hey, would I like a two-for-one cinema ticket offer and why don't I bugger off and entertain myself for a bit and see if it gets better all by itself.

Which it did that time. I suppose it may this time. But the 'P' in 'ISP' is looking very dodgy at the moment.

I'd encourage everybody to give this particular ISP a wide berth. Though I suppose I'm not allowed to name it for fear this'll get yikesed. So I'll just stay quiet.

Yours,

William the Silent

Tara for a bit erm

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadrian!!!
Dec 30, 2006

Back from my Christmas hols and, as is now a regular Yuletide tradition, am utterly sick from bugs picked up through contact with teeny tiny children *coughcough* Bleurghhhh... Didn't keep everyone up on the plane, though - just the rows nearest to me blush

Just before I left, I did something very exciting. Over the years, I've been to a lot of places in the US, but the one where I've managed to go through its airport more times than I can remember but not actually see anything of the place itself is Philadelphia. But, on Thursday, I spent the day there and made it to the city's most exciting tourist destination.

The Liberty Bell?

No (although I did see it through the window, when there was a gap in the queue).

The Rodin Museum?

No (although that was very nice).

So what then?

musicalnote Da da, da da da, da da da, didi da,
Da da, da da da, da da da, didi da,
Da, da da da, da da, da da,
Da, da da da da, daaa...
Da da daaaa! Da didi daaaaa! musicalnote

I ran up the steps of the Art Museum and then stood at the top and jumped around with my arms in the air! somersault

(All right, because I was already more than a bit ill, I jogged up some of them - there was a bit of Chariots of Fire-ing going on at one stage too).

To explain - these are the steps that Rocky runs up in the film. Right at the top of them is a little brass plaque with the imprints of a pair of sneakers and just the name, 'Rocky', marking the point where he stands with his arms above his head and then jumps around a bit. At pretty much any time of the day, there is always someone running up the stairs of the museum (I turned round to watch for a bit when we left and it's true - there's always someone breaking into a bit of a sprint). And then, when you get to the top, you have to strike the pose and get your photo taken.

(Which I did, but it's still on my sister's phone, so I may not be getting it soon or easily).

At one stage, there was a statue of Rocky at the top of the steps too - but the Art Museum were chastened to discover that it was far more popular than any of their exhibits, so they had it removed. It's now been brought back and put at the bottom of the building off to one side. (Photo of self with that? Yep. Also on phone? Yep).

Total Immersion
Aug 17, 2006

Well, after a lot of prevarication and a week of really iffy weather, the sun came out for a bit today and I finally went and did it. Threw myself into the sea, so keeping a promise I made to myself while on an incredibly sweaty tube train in central London at the height of last month's heatwave.

And here's the evidence:

http://ttragula.googlepages.com/beach

Top one is the beach in question. Note the complete absence of other bathers. There were some three hundred or so holidaymakers stretched out along the shore and I was, at the point of immersion, the only one in the water. So showing how determined I was and exactly how cold it was too brr

Second one is the particular bit of the same beach. The advantage to this beach - which I know pretty well - is the sudden drop-off just beyond the crashing wave: it suddenly plummets from knee height to too deep to stand, so leaving you virtually no time to think about the coldness of the water as it hits each thitherto warm bit of you.

Third one - my feet, with pebbles. Note how the pebbles stick to the feet. Dampness! This is after the plunge (I went in twice in fact, because the first time I didn't get my head under and I didn't want to be accused of cheating).

Total Front Page Domination!
Jun 23, 2006

Finally *rubs hands* - my plan has come to fruition! Not only did I sub the University Project now on the Front Page for the whole weekend ... but I polished the UnderGuide piece as well! evilgrin

Wa ha ha ha ha cough cough haaaa ...

Actually, this is not an exercise in self-aggrandisement [note to self: check spelling] in association with other people's work (or rather it's not *just* that) - it's a sneaky way of encouraging people to read A11819757 'Pharmakeia', which is one of the best things I've ever polished for the UG and was a long time getting to the FP. Deserves a readership, in my opinion. Please do give it a go smiley
