Happy 10th Birthday h2g2 - love from Peta - ex-h2g2 Community Editor

My name is Peta. I used to run the communities, blogs and message boards at the BBC.

I've worked within online communities since 1999, when I was the Community Editor of h2g2, way back in the days when Douglas was was still with us and h2g2 was Douglas's at The Digital Village. I've now gone on to join a Social Media company in London, working on lots of interesting and varied online projects; it had to be good to drag me away, h2g2 was the nicest job, ever.

Thank you to everyone who's contributed to h2g2, and make it such a wonderfully creative and friendly community. Particular thanks should go to the Post Editors, who gave - and still give - so much of their own time to the community paper The Post. Thanks to all of the h2g2 volunteer groups, particularly the Aces, the Subs, the Scouts and the Gurus, who were with us from (almost) the beginning of the site; without you it wouldn't have got off the ground. And last off, thanks to all the h2g2 staff members, past and present!

I'd also like to pay tribute to Pheloxi who was just the kindest sweetest guy. You'd be online today, if you could.

Backpacker

If you like to read about interesting places around the world, check out my friend Mark Moxon's travel website at Mark Moxon - Travel Writer. Mark was the The Editor of h2g2 until October 2002 when he finally threw in the towel and went off travelling the world again.

A couple of years ago Mark walked between the two furthest points in the United Kingdom; Land's End to John o'Groats

Mark has now completed his latest project, walking the entire London tube network for a Parkinson's charity - Have a look at his Tubewalker website to see how he described your area of London.

doh

It arrived yesterday, out of the blue with two big burly tatooed men. I thought they had the wrong address, but no, it was Alex - on the quiet, not a mention. Grr.

Peta says: Goodbye h2g2! And thanks for everything...
Jul 1, 2008

Hi h2g2-ers.

This is just to let you all know that I'm leaving the BBC at the end of July, it's been a long run, time to move on now.

I've been working with people and online communities since 1999 when I had the great pleasure to work with Douglas Adams at The Digital Village, on h2g2.

As many of you will know, h2g2 came to the BBC in early 2000, and acquired me too - as h2g2 Community Editor. After a while I moved on to work on the other BBC online communities, blogs and message boards and so on.

I've really enjoyed the eight years I've spent working at the BBC, but I've been offered a *really* wonderful new job and it's far too good an opportunity to turn down.

So from the BBC point of view this is it for me. I'm off at the end of July, and start my new job in September. I'm taking a month off as I want to give being a slacker a good go!

I'll undoubtedly come back to h2g2 at some point and say hi, I definitely hope to!

Take care everyone, it was the best job ever being h2g2 Community Editor! hug

Jun 4, 2008

Mark Moxon, ex-Editor of h2g2, has just started his latest project as Tubewalker!

He's walking the entire London tube network on foot. You can follow his progress via his website http://www.tubewalker.com/ and you never know, if you live in London he may be striding past a tube station near you shortly! Go out and wave an h2g2 T shirt or something! smiley

He's got a blog about his walk here...
